Chapter Twelve: Surprise Visit

June

I woke up late the next morning, feeling groggy and slow as the late morning sun flooded through the motel room’s window. My sleep schedule was still a wreck, but at least I was sleeping at night and waking up in the morning. I blinked hard a few times while looking toward the armchair, seeing Ryan with my new phone in his hands.

“Hey,” I greeted him, my voice still thick from sleep.

Ryan snapped my phone shut and walked over to me, setting it on the nightstand next to the bed. “Good morning,” he greeted me as he peered down at me. It seemed like he had been up for a minute already.

“Is everything okay?” I asked him, unable to stop being so on edge. I had to know everything or it would drive me crazy.

And not in a good way.

Ryan nodded as he glanced at the digital clock with red numbers on the nightstand. “Yeah, I’m just about to head out for a little while.”

I sat straight up and stared at him. “You’re leaving? Where are you going?” I questioned him, not expecting him to leave.

“I need to help the Rebels to defeat Snake,” he explained. “I saw Smoke and Bear in the lot. They are watching out for us. You will be safe.”

An uneasy feeling settled in the pit of my stomach at the thought of him going out alone. For right now, it was safe here. I didn’t want him to go right into the danger zone. “I can come with you.”

Ryan shook his head with a small smile on his face. “There’s a surprise coming for you soon. Just listen for five knocks,” he told me, leaning down to press a gentle kiss against my lips. “I won’t be gone long.”

I gripped his shirt sleeve to keep him from immediately running off. I still felt incredibly nervous, and surprises weren’t exactly my favorite thing in the world right now. “Are you sure? I don’t like us being separated.”

Ryan placed his hands on my upper arms, our eyes locking. “I promise it’ll be okay. I need to go and see my dad and you need to rest, so just stay here and relax. I’ll call you before I come back.”

I released a shaky breath then finally nodded my head, telling myself to stay calm. He could look after himself and we really needed as much help as we could get. We had to stay underground for a little while longer.

My father was notoriously competitive and ambitious. Once he took down one opponent, he would go searching for another one to fight with like he was addicted to the conflict, the risk, the blood. In this instance, he’d lost this round and that made him twice as dangerous. “Ryan, don’t let Snake catch you.”

“He won’t,” he replied. “But you and our baby will never be safe until he’s put in prison for life or put six feet underground.”

I wished it didn’t have to come to that, but my father would never change.
