CHAPTER FOUR

By the time they finally lay spent, Seamus knew that it must be after midnight. He sat up and looked at Mine.

“I’m starved,” Seamus said. “Sex isn’t the only thing I’m craving tonight. My parents are fabulous cooks. Let’s go down and grab something to eat.”

“You’re asking me to dine with you?” Mine asked.

“Yes,” Seamus said. “Normally it’s something I do before going to bed with someone, but for you, I couldn’t resist.”

“I’m not sure I should do this,” Mine said.

“Join me in the kitchen? I’m sure you’ve done that before. You hear about people being found dead in their kitchens all the time.”

“That’s business,” Mine said. “People don’t normally invite me to walk through their homes.”

“Well, I’m not inviting you to do business here. I’m inviting you for a meal. You’re not here in your official capacity. You’re here as…Mine,” Seamus said, grabbing Mine’s hand.

Seamus put his ceremonial robe back on, and then Mine grabbed his grey one. Mine allowed Seamus to lead him down the stairs and into the kitchen, but when they saw Raferty standing there, Mine started to retreat back up the stairs.

“Hey, relax,” Raferty said from near the stove. “You don’t have to hide from me. I’m glad Seamus has a friend over. He needs the cheering up, and from the looks of you two, it looks like you’ve both had a lot of cheer. Anyway, who could not want to see someone in such a great costume? That outfit is terrific. Who would think Death could look so attractive? Come on in. Get some food.”

“My father’s pumpkin soup is amazing,” Seamus said.

“And my wife’s squash casserole is almost the reason I married her,” Raferty said. “Here take some hot cider while Seamus warms the other stuff.”

Seamus let go of Mine’s hand so that he could walk to the refrigerator and get the other food. He watched as his father approached Mine with a warm glass of cider. Seamus almost cringed as his father got close to Mine, but perhaps it was okay. After all, Mine wasn’t here for Raferty tonight.

“Please, just take some food and drink from us tonight. I’m begging you, Mr. Reaper,” Raferty said, adding a little laugh at the end that made Seamus question whether it was real.

Seamus thought he saw a look pass between his father and Mine. Did his father know? Seamus breathed a sigh of relief when he heard Mine respond with simply, “Thank you.”

Seamus was learning to accept his own death, and his journey to the other side was obviously going to be better than he had ever imagined, but he knew that when he left it would hurt his parents, and Seamus hated the idea of doing that. He studied his father for a moment. Raferty smiled at him.

“If you two gentlemen will excuse me, I’m going to take my leave of you for now. My wife is waiting for me upstairs, and we are both a little exhausted from the festivities this evening. Mr. Blue, enjoy your meal.
