CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
I had to give Harken credit for keeping her cool amid the jungle of concrete, skyscrapers, and all the modern technology. She stepped forward a couple of paces, eyes on the black cloud of wraiths above and looking resolved.
The chopper swerved between the enemy monsters. Lights at the front of the aerial vehicle shone in the night sky, but they couldnât keep the wraiths from attaching to the sides or back.
I raised my hand. âWait,â I cautioned as the soldiers prepped for something.
Halgrim looked up with wide eyes, filled with excitement despite the horde of wraiths. âA flying machine! Wow. Smith, you have to teach me how to build one of those.â
I didnât have the energy to tell him that helicopters were beyond my scope of expertise.
Sergeant Murphy gave the order, and the soldiers fired. Grenades sailed through the air, accompanied by a stream of flare fire that lit up the street on either side of the chopper. Wraiths swerved away from the light, back toward the buildings.
The chopper wove through the opening. It was still so far in the distance that it was hard to tell the damage to the wraiths. The creatures were collecting themselves already, circling the light like a band of wolves held at bay by a wall of fire.
I gritted my teeth. The enemy creatures were keeping pace with the chopper. It was only a matter of time before they found a way around the perimeter of light.
I glanced at the soldiers, prepared to say something, and noticed the man with the bigger gun was setting up near the archâs right side. He was a burly guy, not unlike Karl, although he didnât have the beard that King Alfredâs bodyguard did. He wore his hair much shorter, too. A buzzcut. He had tattoos along his neck and on his hands.
He aimed at the line of wraiths.
Murphy shouted, âHave at âem, Wes!â
The burly soldier, who I assumed must be Wes, pulled the trigger. I quickly realized that his gun wasnât a rifle at all. A thick, powerful red beam cut through the dark, slicing up into the cloud of wraiths on the other side of the fading flare fire. The beam was quiet but deadly. Plumes of smoke rose from the black. Wraiths scattered. Wes chased them, an expert with the laser. The red beam flitted around almost like a strobe light at a party.
Halgrimâs eyes lit up with excitement. âOh boy! Go, Army guy! Smith, that looks freaking amazing. Youâve got to teach me how to build one of those, too. Whatâs it called again, a laser? And what is that coming out of it, condensed light? Looks almost like your sword.â
Harkenâs gaze remained glued to the laser as it cut through more wraiths. The creatures retreated toward the buildings.
Wes tried to cut them off, but most evaded the beam. He bit his lip, burning streaks across the corners of a few structures as he worked to get at the crafty, shadowy creatures.
Harken spoke in a low voice, sounding impressed.
