CHAPTER 18
REHAB (#2)
What? You want another chase? Not sick of them by now? Aight, hereâs two for ya. Australia. Season five had just wrapped. I was at the end of my rope. This shooting star was fizzling. On its way back down to Earth, headed for a spectacular explosion. Mercifully, I knew I was getting help after this jaunt down under. MTV had dictated treatment, and I was still on board just as soon as this series of nightclub appearances concluded. All I had to do was make it that far.
Truthfully, I was in no shape to make the trip. A tour was the last thing I needed, but I couldnât turn down the money. They were paying me $30k a night to show up at nightclubs and take photos. Some nights, there were multiple events. In this business, youâve got to strike while the iron is hot. Who knew how long my fifteen minutes would last? I had to take advantage while I could.
When we landed in Australia, my whole team headed directly to the hotel to get settled in and prepare for the first event that night. I had other plans. Even with everyone keyed on me, watching my every step, I managed to give them the slip. I put a bug in the ear of the main promoter, a healthy-looking woman. I told her what I needed, and she said sheâd try to take care of it. The two of us stealthily bounced without telling anyone, and the search was on.
This promoter led me through some shady Australian neighborhoods, visiting various drug dealers she knew, trying to find Oxys. Back at the hotel, my team was freaking out, calling everyone to let them know theyâd lost me again. They were understandably dumbfounded that Iâd managed to escape and was missing. As someone said on our family chat, âHow do you lose one of the most famous people in the world?â It would have been funny if not so dire.
For hours, they searched for me. For those same hours, this promoter and I searched the seediest parts of the city for opiates. Finally, success was ours. We scored some Oxy eighties, which I popped before arriving at the hotel. The pills looked old and crusty, but I was so happy she came through for me that we started to hook up. Next thing I knew, she was on her knees. When I reconnected with my team, I acted like nothing had happened and started to get ready for that nightâs appearance.
Over the next two weeks while we toured Australia, I was so strung out and tired I could barely pull myself out of bed. I only had to work a few hours each night, from about 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., but even that was a struggle. I showed up late. I tried to cancel appearances. It was a disaster. My team literally had to dress me each night and drag me to the events.
I was in rough shape.
