8. Shipshape

You might think you’re safe from spooks out at sea on a ship full of sailors. But as Edgar found out from his time in the Navy, you’d be wrong…

I spent more than 25 years in the Navy, beginning on a large warship, an old vessel built in the 1960s. Age 23, I began as a mechanic and ended up as an officer leading my own department. Although I didn’t see active service myself, certainly over the decades that ship had been a backdrop to scores of war casualties and men losing their lives.

The events I’m going to describe happened during my first few years in the Navy on this ship. I became an electronics and radar engineer, also working on explosives, weapon systems and missile systems. My time was spent at sea, docked in a UK naval base or in foreign ports.

There were so many paranormal incidents. I’ll just mention the main episodes.

On one occasion, I’d just started watch-keeping, which concerns overseeing the smooth running of the ship, and there were two people on watch at a time. We did this at night and Glen, the chap I was on watch with, kept playing jokes on me as we were doing our rounds. We’d each go into a compartment, check all the equipment, then meet for a chat. And these ships are huge. The other sailors were asleep, so the place was deserted.

I’d be walking along and Glen would jump out from behind a piece of equipment, just messing around. We were young, after all.

I got a bit tired of it, though. This particular evening, I’d nipped up the ladder to the bridge and I thought I’d get my own back on him. I could hear someone walking around on the deck I’d just left, so I hid around the corner by the top of the ladder.

Footsteps clanged up the ladder, rung by rung, and I thought, ‘Right. I’ve got him!’ As the steps reached the top, I sprang out and yelled, ‘Boo!’

But no one was there. Not a soul.

A few weeks later, something happened that I found really difficult to handle.

Above the bridge, where the ladders were, there was a platform for the weapon systems. Dusk was falling and I’d gone up the ladder to the platform and made sure everything was locked up and secure. Then I went back down the ladder, strolled about 20 meters, and went up onto another platform to check that equipment. Then I noticed a movement on the platform I’d just left. Glancing over, I saw a figure. Thinking it was a friend of mine, I pelted down the ladder and back up to that platform to say hello – and it was deserted. But there’s no way anybody could have got off without me seeing them.

You’d think that was the worst of it. But after I’d returned to the other platform to continue checking the equipment, I looked over to where I’d just come from. There was a dark shadow, a man’s figure, just stood there.
