So many emotions were running through Max as he went through the motions of making coffee and finding food.

He was beyond angry at William Campbell. Rage, like he’d never known, was running through his veins, filling every last cell of his being.

He was angry at the man for the original attack and for terrorizing Lil after the fact. He was angry that she’d had to go through the trial without him. He was angry at the prison guards who’d let Campbell escape.

Angry at Campbell for hunting her down. For finding her when she should have been safe, not just in her town but in his house.

Max was also scared. Which probably fueled the anger. Scared for Lil. Scared that the jackass had found not only her town, but her hideaway.

Max was also angry at Lil herself. For hiding everything away inside of her. For not telling them earlier. For not telling them everything now.

And he was hurt. His damn feelings were bruised, and that was probably the biggest hurt of all.

She hadn’t trusted him with the whole story.

She’d shared his bed. He’d been planning a damn future with her for more years than he’d like to admit.

But especially over the past couple of days.

They fit. They were in sync in so many ways. They laughed easily and often. They shared touches, looks, emotions.

They could talk for hours about everything from art to books to cooking to travel to dreams. They gave each other space for work and were comfortable with silence.

All the things he’d wanted. It was going along exactly with his master plan.

Just like one of his books.

Except she’d just thrown in one heck of a plot twist.

She didn’t trust him enough.

Not to truly open up and share with him.

The garage door opened and closed. Gage and Rayce marched in looking all kinds of worried. Max waved them away to the living room, knowing they’d need to see for themselves that Lil wasn’t hurt.

And it gave him a couple of extra minutes to put away his own hurt.

This wasn’t about him.

He needed to be there for her.

But emotions boiled and bubbled inside. He had to keep them locked down.

Finally, Max blew out another deep breath and walked into the living room.

Lil was surrounded by her brothers, the three big men all crowded onto the couch with her. Gage had her tucked into his side, and the twins filled up the couch on her other side.

The police chief sat in one of the chairs opposite them and the dog sat at Dave’s side. Facing Lil with his head on the antique chest Max used as a coffee table.

Drool was puddling along the surface.

Max used another table to put down the tray and brought a mug of green tea to Lil. She smiled her thanks to him and he retreated to lean against the doorjamb.

No way was he settled enough to sit and play nice.

If he could wrap her in his arms and hold her, it would be easier, but her brothers needed to be near her as well.
