CHAPTER XVI

“What happened to his head?” Alixus asked as Ripper dumped the body in the snow at the edge of the village.

“He pissed me off,” Ripper grunted.

“Hmm.”

“Will this work?” Jak asked. He was impatient to get going, desperate to find and eliminate more of these Revek monsters.

“I need a moment. I need the crystal,” Alixus replied, holding out her hand.

Jak retrieved it from its pouch on his belt and set it in her hand. She studied it for a moment, then crouched down and placed her hand over the corpse’s chest. It began to glow a deep red that was somehow different from the color he normally saw when Keeza was casting a fire spell. She became rigid and the glow intensified.

Alixus closed her eyes.

While she did that, Jak turned his attention to the others. “So, we know their goal now: raise the dead. I think we can get ahead of this at least somewhat if we can come up with some places that might hold a lot of corpses.”

“The Verdant Valley,” Nessa said immediately.

“Yes,” Brentak agreed. “Some of the worst fighting on the island occurred there. We recovered what dead we could, but there was so much fighting, and there would be a lot of dead karn there…” He hesitated, glancing at Ripper and Nessa and the other karn. “Sorry.”

Ripper sighed heavily. “It’s in the past,” he said finally.

“Yes,” Brentak murmured. “There would be a lot of corpses there.”

“All right, that’s our next bet. If we hurry, we can get there by nightfall,” Jak said.

“Only with a small warparty,” Ripper muttered.

“Yeah...you all should rest, get some food and some of the healing drink to restore your strength. We may have a hard fight ahead of us,” Jak replied.

“Good point. No way I’m missing out on cracking more skulls. Come on, you two,” Ripper said, leading his karn warriors off into the village.

Jak returned his attention to the others. Nessa and Keeza were watching Alixus, who was as still as a stone.

“Nessa, Keeza? Any other ideas?” he asked.

“No,” Keeza replied.

“I can’t think of anything,” Nessa said after a moment. “I’m sure I’m missing something, but beyond the Verdant Valley, Shadow Lake, and the Barrens, I’m not sure I can think of anywhere that has an obvious and vast amount of corpses.”

“Hopefully this tracking crystal will work out,” Jak said.

They fell silent and waited impatiently as Alixus continued to work. She still hadn’t moved, her eyes remained closed.

Just when Jak was about to ask if it was going right or wrong, she suddenly opened her eyes and stood up. Turning around, she presented the crystal to him. It was pulsing steadily and quickly, a dark black light emanating from it.

“It works,” she said.

Jak accepted it and studied it. “It’s detecting the corpse?”

“Yes.”

“All right then.” He frowned more deeply as he looked at the headless body.

“What?” Keeza asked.

“Just...should we put any stock into what he said? Of returning from the dead? Brentak?” Jak replied.

“I can’t know for sure,” Brentak replied, “but so
