Kathy’s long hours in the garden paid off, with more radishes, lettuce, onions, and beet greens than they could ever eat. Bushes within a stone’s throw of the house produced buckets of salmonberries and blueberries. Each day, more salmon pressed into the inlet and nosed up streams.

On a late July evening, Richard and Kathy stood on their beach and gazed across a placid sea. Everywhere they looked, silver bodies popped up. Freeze a moment of time, and there’d be hundreds of fish suspended in midair. Thousands along the inlet’s full length.

But every night, before sleep, Richard sat on the edge of his bed and studied the mountain’s growing scar. He pictured the day’s work—the fallen trees stripped of limbs, bucked to length, yarded, stacked, and trucked to the beachside sort yard. He imagined the panicked squirrels, the frightened birds, the scattered deer. He fantasized about a midnight raid: sugar in gas tanks, engines drained of oil, anything to stop the destruction.

He also knew he didn’t have it in him. Richard knew he’d find common ground, over a burger and a milkshake, with any of the truckers or fellers working across the inlet. Meeting violence with violence was not his way. What then to do with the grief and anger? How to pick up the pieces of a shattered dream?
