Chapter Eleven

Even though Darrell tried hard not to bug Marshall, once therapy was over, he was intensely bored. Megan had told him he’d probably need to rest, but he didn’t want to rest. He wanted to work. He wanted to take a ride on his horse. He wanted to go down to the corral and see what was happening at the next rodeo. He wanted to be normal again.

The longer he thought about it, the tighter his throat became, so he picked the phone up and called Marshall’s cell phone.

“Are you okay?” Marshall said in lieu of hello.

“I’m fine,” Darrell answered. “I just...” he couldn’t say he’d wanted to talk without shocking Marshall’s system so he let the sentence trail off. “You real busy out there?”

“Yeah,” Marshall admitted. “Damn weather hasn’t made up its mind yet about staying hot or cold. I don’t know whether to go ahead and plant yet or not.”

“I’d wait,” Darrell said. “Give it a little while and I can help you.”

“Maybe,” Marshall said with reluctance in his voice.

Darrell was aware Marshall did not sound convinced. Maybe he could get a permission note from Megan by the time Marshall decided to plant the fields.

“So, what are you doing now?” he asked.

“Cleaning out some stalls,” Marshall answered. “Having a lot of fun.”

“You’re making good time without me,” Darrell said in surprise.

“Cole’s here,” Marshall said. “They aren’t doing any planting at Raven Branch yet so he had a little extra time. He got Ramón to help Emma work with the new horses.”

“Oh. Well,” Darrell stated as he fought for an easy way to ask what he was thinking. “What are you planning to do when you’re done working?”

“The usual,” Marshall said. “Frozen dinner for me, home cooked meal for Cole. Life isn’t fair.”

“Why don’t ya’ll come down here for supper?” Darrell asked. “I’m no chef, but I’ve got food and the means to heat it up.”

“Sounds good to me,” Marshall agreed. “I’ll tell Cole. We’ll be along around the usual time.”

“Okay.” Quitting time was pretty far off, but at least now Darrell had something to look forward to. He filled the rest of the day by assembling the ingredients for his five-alarm chili and started it simmering on the back of the stove and then watched an inordinate amount of television. He really only watched television when he was too injured to work and he kind of thought it had gone downhill since his broken tailbone. He was nearly asleep when the front door opened. He felt a flash of nervousness as he wondered what he was going to say to Cole.

“Hey,” Marshall said, looking uncharacteristically downcast. “Cole, uh, Cole couldn’t make it.”

“Oh.” Darrell nodded and shrugged like it was no big deal. “Well. Okay. More chili for us then, I guess.”

“Emma needed him at home tonight,” Marshall went on. “And I think he’s used to being able to take Justine around with him for some stuff and--”

“I get it,” Darrell cut in. “Hungry?”

“Starving,” Marshall said, a little too enthusiastically.
