The opening track from Ministry’s 1989 album The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste was the first solid indication that the Chicago-based band had fully transformed from its dancey synth-pop roots to a style more firmly based in crushing industrial thrash metal. “Thieves” starts with a menacing staccato riff and evolves into a wild-eyed ride through surging guitars and menacing distorted vocals and includes samples from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket and a Richard Nixon speech. “Thieves” was more than a heavy song about political manipulation and hypocrisy, it was storming new statement of intent—to destroy all that had come before.
Many, if not all adolescents go through a period—however brief—of kleptomania. At a time in their lives when it seems like they have little control over anything, including the changes in their own bodies, stealing candy from a shop or changing price tags at a department store gives the thief a feeling of power, and, if he gets away with the heist, the accomplishment is accompanied by an endorphin rush comparable to drug high. For developing bands, stealing can serve a different purpose. Some groups that haven’t gotten noticed yet literally have to steal to survive. Others have stolen to construct stage sets or score better instruments. More than a few have taken from their fellow man to score drugs. And then there are the thrill-seekers that aren’t much different than the average teenager stealing just for kicks. Sometimes, getting away with taking shit for free is simply a matter of opportunity and convenience, but sometimes it’s a challenging ordeal and if everything goes south there can be severe consequences.

Slipknot, Stone Sour
I used to walk to school every morning and the first thing I would do is hit that convenience store right across the street from my house. I would fill my pockets with candy bars, then I would go to school and sell them for twenty-five to fifty cents apiece so I’d have money to buy cigarettes or actually get some food. It’s kind of amazing I never got caught. When I was a teenager, I didn’t have any money so I learned how to steal cars. Me and the people I hung out with on the street would either sell them or trade them for drugs. The nicest car we ever got was a ’78 Impala, which we probably got a grand for. And then I think we just wasted it on narcotics. Shitty cars were easier to get a hold of because nobody cared about them. But they didn’t make us much money at all.
AL JOURGENSEN
Ministry, Revolting Cocks
I used to steal cars and go on joy rides, but I never profited from it. It was more of a primal instinct. I was bored and I knew how to steal cars. Back then it was so easy. All you needed was a screwdriver. Pop the ignition and you’re in. But out of principle, when you’re on the road and in the middle of Kansas or something,
