His face was just inches from mine as I examined the ear. “I think if I had a doctor like you,” I could feel his warm breath on my cheek, “I’d be hurting myself on purpose.”
“Seems like you do pretty well without it being on purpose.” I reached into the bag and pulled out a small vile and surgical gloves.
He glanced at it. “Is that—”
“Yep.” I pulled on the gloves and tossed the white powdery rock onto my palm. “Rose lent me a chunk. She calls it snow coke but it’s crack whatever way you look at it.” I looked up at him. “It works like a local anesthetic on the mouth and tongue. I thought I’d try it on the ear, so you don’t feel the needle.” I reached forward and rubbed the cube along his ear.
“It’s pretty numb anyway,” he said. “But I was kind of hoping you’d use some of last night’s techniques. It would take my mind right off my ear.”
My face warmed as he spoke and then he lifted his hand and rubbed his thumb over the fabric of my blouse and across my nipple. It hardened instantly, and I dropped the white rock. It fell behind the bed. “So much for anesthesia.”
“Guess you’ll just have to resort to another plan,” he said suggestively.
“I guess that all depends on how much you want this to look like an earlobe when I’m done.”
He shrugged. “I’m already not ever going to be able to wear those diamond studs again.”
I placed a clean cloth on the bed next to me and unfolded it. I pulled out the thinnest needle I could find, the cotton thread I’d cut and a lighter. I held the needle in the flame until it glowed red and then I let it cool before threading the eye. “Sometimes you can use super glue for a cut, but this is more than a cut. I’m afraid all I can do is crudely attach the two pieces together and see if they mend. But no promises.” I moved closer and realized my biggest hurdle was being this close to him and having to concentrate on something other than the fact that I wanted him to touch me. I cleaned the ear front and back with the antiseptic I’d brought and then sat back. “You ready?”
He looked completely calm. “After what I’ve been through this should be a fucking cake walk, especially because all I’ll be thinking about is you pressed up against me.”
I laughed. “You really are feeling better.”
“Way better.”
I was pretty steady handed when it came to stuff like this, and I always figured I’d have made a good surgeon or battlefield medic. The one thing that life with the club had afforded me was plenty of opportunities to play doctor. But this was the first time I’d had a patient who made it hard to concentrate. I took a deep breath and realized I was at an odd angle for stitching. “I need to be straight on.
