COME AS YOU ARE

The town of Aberdeen was a depressed town out on the Olympic Peninsula, just half an hour from the ocean, and about forty minutes south of Quinault.

Aberdeen, Gateway to the Olympics. Doorway to the Rainforest. Home of Kurt Cobain, where the music all started, practicing with Krist Novoselic in his parents’ garage in the ’80s. A sign leading into town told tourists to “Come as You Are.” A drawbridge passed over the Chehalis River that once, a long time ago, used to be choked with logs destined for the mills. A rare early afternoon swath of sun streamed through the car windows. Joel Hines sat in the driver’s seat of his truck, and Dennis Reynolds sat shotgun. They didn’t speak. Hines thought about the town and what he had to do there, and Dennis—well, who knew what he was thinking about. His fuckup dad, maybe. Something about his mom, an affair or something. Kid needed to work that shit out, just like he was. Get it out of his hair early. Don’t wait so fucking long to take care of things.

He had that sense, though, that Dennis could help. Work a way around Allie’s sphere of influence using that same unearthly song. Hines had been aware of that little ditty for a while now, its melody an irritant, and he thought: could it be used against him?

Not if we can use it first.

Keep practicing that fucking guitar, kid.

Hines hated Aberdeen. The slow entrance into town—a boring stretch of road taken at a reduced highway speed that seemed to drag on forever—and the constant twists and turns took nearly thirty minutes to drive through.

He also hated it because of his experiences there and the events that had darkened his life. He had forgiven many of his father’s failings, but maybe not his disregard of his mother. His mother who’d left him. His mother who, regardless of her abandonment of him, deserved to be found again. That would happen, he was certain, when he released his darkness and found the path to her. Wherever she was, Hines believed he could attain a type of enlightenment that would help him reach into the void and find her. He had started his journey. He just had to open the gate and walk through.

He blamed much of his hatred toward the bitch Allie, the witch who first introduced him to the Moss that saved his life. But then, when he’d needed it most, she took it away.

What did it matter that he and Dennis had found the box of Moss? He couldn’t open it, even after the shit that went down in the Enchanted Valley. That got him nowhere except saying goodbye and good riddance to Kat and Tiptoe. He still didn’t know how that young man had found them at the chalet. Maybe he and Kat had been working together somehow from the start. Maybe Serena had told him to go look for her. The key wasn’t at the chalet, and the key Tippy had didn’t work, so maybe Serena had kept it after all.
