Court House played host to both London Midland and Scottish Railway services to Cudworth and Sheffield, and London and North Eastern Railway trains to Penistone, Doncaster and Sheffield. This immediate post-war picture shows an ex-Midland Railway 0-4-4 tank engine – designed for exactly this sort of work – arriving at the station with either the Cudworth Flyer or a local from Sheffield. The engine would have been based at Royston shed. Bob Green Collection

If all this looks like a failure of common sense, then that is also how it looked to many of the town’s dignitaries at the time. There were several attempts to create a central or union station for the town, and the attempt that made the most progress came with the Hull and Barnsley Railway’s plan to run right into the town centre. But both the Hull and Barnsley’s ambitions and the hopes for one central railway terminal came to nothing, and Barnsley ended up with two stations sitting side by side.
