Chapter 12

It was another day’s journey across the plains of Syronul, various hills and burrows rising up every now and then to put everyone on guard. We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary had assured them that there shouldn’t be any more monsters, and that the worst of the dangers were behind them. Of course, he also pointed out that within a few days they would also need to sneak past Vhodan’s endless armies. Still, everyone was rather relieved to not be attacked by any more winged beasts.

"I don' like these mountains," Ironja complained. "They ain't shaped right."

"They're hills, not mountains," Zetine corrected. "Are you not a hill dwarf?"

"You best watch yer tongue, lass," he growled up at her. "I was born in the stone-lands, and I will die in the stone-lands."

"Well, ideally," Jubilatious said from ahead of them.

"Really, Jubilatious?" Mizt-Ied asked from the back of the group.

"What?" He feigned ignorance. "No one really knows when they're going to die. Why, you could be struck by lightning in just a moment and not even know it hit you."

"Is that a threat, boy?" Ironja asked with as much bravado as he could muster.

"Not at all," he replied. "But we are in the domain of the wizards. Our lot tend to be arses. If you meet one, best not to anger him."

"Or you could just be nicer," Mizt-Ied suggested.

"You clearly have never met a wizard," he retorted.

"I... met you?" She said with a hint of confusion.

"And I'm as nice as we get," he replied. "Trust me, once you see another wizard, you'll find it a miracle I have empathy. You'd swear it's a requirement to remove it if you want to graduate."

Garr suddenly stopped, and with him so did Jermaind and We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary. The orc said, "Quiet," and all were quiet.

The others carefully drew their various weapons, and Jubilatious readied his staff, while We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary did his best to look intimidating while still shackled. Slowly, with an arrow notched, Garr turned around in a circular motion. His face was unreadable, completely devoid of any emotion as he took in the surrounding nature.

"What is it?" Zetine asked from his side.

"Trolls," Garr replied.

"Ogres," We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary corrected. "I thought we were too far away from their domain, but I suppose they've moved north..."

"What even is an ogre?" Mizt-Ied asked nervously.

"Bastard children of the giants," We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary explained. "They eat sapients almost exclusively. Humans are their preferred meal."

"At least that gives me a running chance," she awkwardly joked.

Zetine asked, "Can you tell how many there are?"

"Not without listening to them move," Garr said. "But four, at least, from each of the cardinal directions."

"Do they have any weaknesses?" Jubilatious asked.

We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary informed him, "Cutting the head off usually works. Vhodan breeds monsters to kill, not for them to be defeated."

"Of course he does, the twat," Jubilatious grumbled.

"They're coming," Garr suddenly said, the faintest hint of fear in his voice.

The beings that appeared over the hills certainly seemed to be giant. Their skin was a sickly purple that contrasted horribly against We-Will-Reach-Sanctuary’s own purple skin, and it was covered in rough patches of hair.
