I asked, "Where's the first script and why didn't you want to do it?" On Saturday night I read the original script and liked it very much. I told DeHaven I would work the whole of Sunday with the writer Alan Sharp.... We got out a complete new continuity script, keeping to the original story lines, the original scenes and bringing out quite clearly the reason why the gangster [Scott] comes out of retirement for his last run.
A replacement also had to be found for the departing Tina Aumont. Scott's choice was Bonnie Bedelia, who had made an impression as the pregnant dance-marathon contestant in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? She had just wrapped another picture in Almaria, less than a hundred miles from Granada. Scott sent her the script and called her three times, begging her to take the part, but she wasn't interested.
When Bedelia demurred, Aumont was replaced by American actress Trish Van Devere, a decision that created several parallels between Scott's latest screen role and real life. In the Last Run, Dewhurst, who was visiting the set with Alex, Campbell, and her father-in-law, was cast in the cameo role of a prostitute friend of Harry Garmes. They have one extended scene together. On the surface, it appears these two, the retired gangster and the earth-mother hooker, have no emotional ties. It's strictly a business relationship. But it seems she does have feelings for him. She offers to make him dinner before he goes off on his last job. Harry declines the meal, but he trusts her to hold onto his life savings before he leaves, possibly never to return.
Then he meets the new woman with whom he becomes involved. Life imitated art as Scott would later leave the woman playing his old reliable bedmate (Dewhurst) and take up with the actress cast as his new romantic interest (Van Devere). Then, to add to a double dose of irony, in his next film The Hospital he would play a doctor going through male menopause whose wife has left him.
Scott was repeating the pattern of his love relationships by running away from intimacy and responsibility. As each of his marriages became weighted down with offspring and mortgages, he ran into the arms of another woman. Dewhurst represented a home with bills to pay and children to support. Van Devere was a beautiful young woman offering adulation and excitement rather than repair estimates and report cards.
Van Devere had made a hit in Carl Reiner's bizarre comedy Where's Poppa? and was just starting to get some recognition. She was born Patricia Dressel in Tenafly, New Jersey, and was raised in nearby Norwood. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1965 and soon thereafter began her theatrical career by touring with the Free Southern Theatre. This was an integrated company that presented plays tackling controversial racial topics like In White America and The Death of Bessie Smith, in Mississippi and South Carolina. Three years later, after working with the Poor People's Campaign for
