CHAPTER 62
The next morning, I dragged my tired body downstairs somewhat later than usual. I stared at the hundreds of sugar cookies. Right now, I didnât think I could eat or look at another cookie in a long, long time. The house was chilly, so I took my coffee to the fireplace where I would get a fire going to keep me warm for a day of decorating. I pulled my robe close to me before going out to the deck to get more firewood. As I glanced across the backyard, I saw beer cans scattered on the white snow. I assumed they must have come from the young men I saw running from my place last night. I closed the door to the cold air and rushed to look out the front of the house. There were about six more cans in plain sight. Could it simply be excused by saying they were just here to party? Why here?
I sat in the rocker and tried to size up my problem. Should I just go to church this morning and forget all this nonsense? Oh! The thought of people driving by here on their way to church made me realize I needed to get out there quickly and pick up what I could. I dashed upstairs, threw on jeans and a sweatshirt, grabbed a trash bag, and headed out the door. This incident reminded me of when Blade dumped trash in my front yard. Ellie and I had gone out on a cold, snowy day before dawn to get it all picked up. Was this going to become the norm for me living on Main Street in Borna? It was certainly different than living in my prestigious neighborhood in South Haven!
The passengers of one car honked at me as they passed by. It was likely someone I knew, but I wasnât going to acknowledge them. I eventually worked myself around to the backyard and told myself I probably needed to check every morning for things like this. Next week was the church tour and many cars would be traveling by.
When I got inside, I heard the phone ringing. It was Cotton. âI hope youâll be home today, Miss Kate, because my friend Arnie is available to help me bring your tree,â he said, excitement evident in his voice.
I smiled at the thought. âSure, bring it on! Iâll be here decorating cookies all day.â Now I felt it was going to be a fun day, so I cleared a path for them to bring the tree in through the front door where it would be closest to the front window.
Still drinking my morning coffee and nibbling on fruit, I started mixing icing colors for the cookies. They were all getting a white base which had to dry before I could do any detailing. I got interrupted by my usual Sunday call from Jack. He was in good spirits as he repeated his plans to go to South Haven before coming here.
