Chapter Nine
âI told you to stay away, kid,â Preston said, scowling as Jackson approached his table with Wi Lee following on behind.
Finbar didnât agree with Prestonâs attitude to Jackson, but he said nothing. Despite their lack of encouragement, Jackson still joined them at the back of the Horned Moon.
âWiley wants to talk to you,â Jackson said, his tone hurt. Then he quickly told them about the fight.
âDespite that problem Iâve now booked my place at the final table,â Wi Lee said. âIâve watched you play and youâre skilled enough to win, so Iâd like to offer you a deal.â
âNo deal,â Preston snapped before Wi Lee could outline his offer.
Wi Lee ignored Preston and raised his eyebrows.
âYouâre worried youâll lose,â Finbar said.
âI am,â Wi Lee said, surprising Finbar with his honesty. âThe emperor of China loves diamonds. He wishes to own this one so he tasked two of his most trusted aides to obtain the diamond. One is now dead, so I must ensure I return with it, and I will.â
âYour need is great, but ours is greater. So as Preston said, no deal.â
âYour need is different than mine. You believe itâs yours by right, but once you possess it, what then?â Wi Lee spread his hands while shrugging. âIâm offering a deal, and a fair price.â
âHow much?â Finbar asked casually.
âForty thousand dollars.â
âForty!â Preston snorted. âItâs worth at least sixty-four.â
âThatâs the recompense to the winner who fights through on his own. Iâm offering a deal in which we work together and one of us backs out to let the other win.â
Finbar narrowed his eyes. âEither of us? Does that mean youâre prepared to lose?â
âAs I said, Iâll do anything to acquire that diamond. If I must lose the game in order to leave town with it, thatâs what Iâll do.â
Finbar rubbed his chin and Preston gave a subdued shrug.
âThatâs an interesting offer,â Finbar said.
âIâll leave you to think about it.â Wi Lee leaned forward and whispered in Finbarâs ear. âSay that phrase at the poker table tomorrow and Iâll play like a fool and lose every dollar I have to you. In return, when youâve won, youâll give me the diamond for our agreed price.â
With that offer Wi Lee nodded to each man and then left the saloon.
âWhat do you think of that, Preston?â Finbar said.
âI said we would never make a deal. That still stands.â
Finbar whistled under his breath. âYou must admit if we were looking to accept a deal, that was a tempting one.â
âThose types of deal are the ones you have to stand firm against.â Preston turned to Jackson and lowered his voice. âThatâs why I never wanted the kid involved, and why I never want to see him or hear of his twisted plans to get his hands on our diamond again.â
âI brought Wiley here for you to hear his offer and not because I want to get a share of the diamond,â Jackson said.
Preston snorted. âYou want something. I can see it in your eyes. A
