Meryl and Joe Mazzello.
Gail and Tom’s marriage is on the rocks because of his workaholic ways, but the ordeal brings them closer together. The Hartmans become separated after Tom tries to steal Terry’s gun at their riverside campsite; infuriated, Wade runs after Tom and fires at him, believing he’s dead. Wade, holding Gail and Roarke hostage, forces the two back into the raft and orders Gail to paddle them through a forbidden series of rapids dubbed the Gauntlet. Gail objects. Although she is only one of three river experts who’ve survived those rough waters, Gail argues it’s too dangerous with Roarke onboard. Nevertheless, she pulls off the impossible. Waiting at the end of the Gauntlet, Tom attacks Terry and frees the gun for Gail to grab and shoot Wade. She kills him in a single shot.
“It’s a desperate attempt at something that is fundamentally not achievable,” a nameless film executive sneered to Us magazine, dismissing Meryl’s genuine desire to tackle a new challenge as a shameless play for a box-office smash. With a sarcastic edge, the Us source added, “Although I’m looking forward to the raft scenes.”
The River Wild allowed Meryl to regain “that old feeling of having climbed a little too high up on the tree—of skating out onto the ice before it’s frozen solid enough.” She later admitted that, yes, “it was a bit of a midlife crisis.” Her preparation involved pumping a lot of iron. She worked out three and a half hours a day for some six months, consuming “900 calories and practically no cooked food,” she recalled. “Oh god, it was ridiculous.… And what really amazed me was that I didn’t look that different! I did strength training for an hour and a half to two hours and then yoga for an hour, which I still do. Not to sound like I’ve been in California too long, but it really is very centering.”
Arlene Burns, a former river guide in the Himalayas and currently the mayor of Mosier, Oregon, helped Meryl reconnect with her adrenaline-junkie side. Arlene met The River Wild’s director, Curtis Hanson, by happenstance while he was scouting filming locations in Idaho. Meryl and son Henry, officially a teenager at age thirteen, joined Arlene in cabins along Oregon’s Rogue River, where Arlene showed Meryl how to navigate a raft and swim the rapids without one. The guide, who became Meryl’s rafting double during the four-month shoot, soon realized that her trainee was studying her mannerisms.
“It was a trip,” Arlene says. “The funny thing was I felt we were like soulmates, and of course we felt like soulmates because she’s acting like me—and at least I like myself, you know. I was like, ‘Wow I just feel we have so much in common. We had this bond.’ Then when I started kind of figuring it out, I noticed that she sat how I sat and she kind of moved her hands the way I moved my hands. That was what she did. I was the person she was mimicking.
