Pain

Pain stared right into his gray eyes in the mirror. Butterfly was right. It was getting easier to do. What did “the man I see” look like to her? What if it looked different to him? Why did he need to see him? All of it was secret Butterfly games he enjoyed playing with her. But none of it was a game to her which made it enjoyable to play. He wasn’t a puzzler like Kult and not knowing these answers didn’t bother him at all. He could go all his life never seeing the man she did. As long as she saw him, what did it matter what he saw. A man, a monster, an angel, a devil? There was a little of all of that in him, he didn’t need to see it to know that. But for her, he’d look. Because she requested it. And that is what tethered his sanity.

But there was a volcano slowly building pressure inside him. He wished he knew what was happening with his powers. They were growing. Changing. No doubt in response to all the new developments. But it was how they were changing and growing that concerned him. He should’ve been less possessive since Butterfly chose him, but the opposite happened. He’d never dared dream she’d be insane enough to pick him but now that she had, he would damn sure protect her choice no matter what it took. She was over the fucking moon thrilled about that baby, and regardless of who’s it actually was, he would protect that too.

It didn’t stop everything from making zero sense. Even if the child was his, how did Quantum’s protective directive allow it? He was the least equipped for something like that. At first he’d thought Quantum straight up lied about it. But that didn’t fit. Quantum’s every move before that implied he was trying to eliminate all of them in order to be with Butterfly and protect her. Then he named him as the father and destroyed that theory.

And now they were ironically being summoned to the King’s Castle to help with the creation of soldiers. Which meant dealing with the connection Quantum surely still had with Butterfly. He figured that out the night he’d choked him out. Pain knew for a fact he wasn’t hurting Butterfly more than was safe, which meant he’d done it for other reasons. That’s when he realized Quantum’s “Congratulations, you’re a father” wasn’t as genuine as he’d first thought and maybe even hoped.

He almost wished he could see The King’s face when Kult informed him their safe house was no longer safe and they’d be coming for an extended stay till other arrangements were made.

“Pain?”

He angled his head to the bathroom opening. “I’m in here.”

Butterfly flew in wearing a bright yellow dress, spinning with a smile. “How does it look? I mostly need to know does my butt show too much in it. I’m getting fat.”

She shot a finger at him when he gave a light snort and turned, sitting on the long vanity.
