Chapter Five

Caleb

Caleb stared in dismay at the sight of the water in the dog bowl before him, ignoring the soup entirely. He wouldn’t mind rinsing out his mouth, but he didn’t know how he was going to drink out of it. It was shallow enough, but it was obviously made for a dog. Of course, that didn’t seem to matter — the food had been, too.

He tried to drink but mostly made a mess. Some of the contents of the bowl went up his nose, and he sputtered and wiped his nose on his arm as he tried to clear it. He leaned down again, trying to drink, but most of it seemed to go up his nose.

“It will take practice,” Liam said.

Caleb’s head whipped up as he glared at the vampire. He didn’t want to hear that it would take practice; he didn’t want to practice this sort of thing at all.

“So practice, pet. Drink. Eat.”

Caleb ignored the second order, returning to the water and drinking more. This time he had more success, even though that wasn’t saying much.

But the next time Liam spoke, his voice was harder, rougher, and his accent was heavier. “I told you to eat, no?”

“I’m not hungry.”

The words fell like stones from his lips, and Caleb didn’t dare look up at his new master to see his reaction. He didn’t have to. Liam strode forward, and he grabbed Caleb by the collar, yanking him up. “You will eat every last drop of soup in that bowl,” he said, his voice as calm as his demeanor was filled with heat. “Are we clear?”

“No! I’m not hungry!”

Liam examined him for a moment and then dropped Caleb to the ground. For that moment, Caleb thought that maybe reason had prevailed, that the vampire understood he couldn’t possibly be hungry after everything he’d been through that night.

Instead, Liam twisted his fingers in Caleb’s hair again, and he pushed him down, forcing his face into the bowl.

“I told you to eat, pet. My patience wears thin. Either eat the soup or eat the... other food the hotel deems more appropriate for you.”

Caleb gagged at the thought.

Trying to figure out how to take the first bite was the worst, and he realized that if he drank the juice first, he wouldn’t feel quite so much like he was going to drown in cold soup. The second was a little easier, and by the time he swallowed the third mouthful, Liam had let up on his hair. He didn’t stop except to steal occasional drinks of water, casting a sidelong glance up at the vampire to make sure he wasn’t going to freak out again.

He didn’t, and even though his stomach churned, Caleb finished off the bowl, feeling all the while that he was going to vomit.

“Good boy,” Liam said, considering him. “Now wag your tail for me. Shake your cute little behind for me, puppy.”

Caleb’s jaw clenched as he did, and it wasn’t only because of the order. He didn’t want to draw Liam’s attention to the fact that he hadn’t completely lost his erection.
