COLE STOOD IN THE CENTER of Sarah’s room at the lodge and glanced about. He’d convinced Madeleine to let him in, even though the cops had already done a cursory look and had determined there was nothing there that provided any clues to Sarah’s whereabouts. He didn’t know what he was looking for, but just knew he had to look.

Nothing seemed amiss.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, he glanced to a lodge notepad and pen lying there. He picked it up and read the lines scribbled across the page.

You feel like home, and home is everything.

You look like home, and home is comforting.

You keep me safe, and that feels like home.

You keep me safe, and that feels like love.

Song lyrics? Did Sarah write a song, or parts of a song this morning while she was waiting? Not a complete song, to be sure, but maybe some lines she wanted to capture. He read the words again, and something broke loose in his heart.

Was she thinking of him when she wrote these words? He couldn’t assume. Could he?

Was she falling in love with him, too?

He made her feel like home. No doubt about that. Nothing was better than feeling like home. Was it?

Yes. Being in love.

Lifting his gaze, he stared across the room. He had to find her. Where in the hell was she? What did that sonofabitch do with her?

He prayed he’d done nothing to her.

His gut clutched with nausea at the thought.

Standing, he folded the paper and put it in his pocket. Staring back down at the bed, it dawned on him. Where was her guitar?

He turned and scanned the room. He paced and looked behind and under things. Her guitar was not here. She took it with her.

Why?

There was only one reason he could think of. Max still planned to have her sing tonight. They were either heading to, or somewhere close by the ranch.

Moving for the door, he pulled his phone out of his shirt pocket and dialed Chandler.
