Kane

“William, do you have a minute?”

Dealing with Tyler’s situation had Kane so distracted that he didn’t notice William’s email until this morning regarding tomorrow’s board meeting.

“Kane!” William turned from his spot in front of the window. “Yes, son. Come in and close the door.”

Kane closed the door behind him and waited for William to gesture to the seat in front of his large desk. To think that this man might not be here in the office after tomorrow upset him more than he realized.

The information Taylor had suggested Weston was responsible for requesting the board meeting. As the oldest son of William Sr., Weston thought he had the right to the company whether he earned it or not. It didn’t matter that the man had nearly bankrupted Bennett Industries the last time he was in charge.

“Why don’t you want me there tomorrow?”

The email he received from William had rattled him. Never had he been asked not to come to a board meeting. It never mattered that he didn’t own shares in the company. William always appreciated his insight.

“Don’t stress over this one. You don’t need to be—”

“William, what are you not telling me?”

William lit a cigar and took a puff, exhaling with a loud sigh. Normally he only smoked in his office at his home, never at the main complex.

“I figured I might as well enjoy this cigar in this office today.” William continued to gaze out the window, like he didn’t have a care in the world. “And the view, it’s lovely, don’t you think?”

One thing Kane appreciated about the old man was his directness and how he hated to waste anyone’s time. His behavior today seemed out of character. He leaned back in his chair and crossed his leg at the ankle and decided to play along.

“You have another one of those?”

William smiled over his shoulder and gestured to the small case on the edge of his desk. Kane plucked one out of the case and closed it. Seconds later, he stood next to William at the window.

“You know why I brought you in to run the security division, Kane?”

“Other than the fact I’m good at it?”

William chuckled. “That you are. There was never any doubt that you would be.” He tapped the cigar in the ashtray next to him. “No, son. It was your potential and loyalty. Once you have a goal, nothing and no one gets in your way. And once you choose a side, you stay on that side, no matter what.” He pointed a finger at Kane. “Now for most people that would be detrimental, but not you. You need to have all the background, all the facts before pursuing that goal, choosing that side.” William turned to face him, his expression serious. “You’re a good man, Kane Garrett.”

Kane puffed on the cigar and let the words sink in. It wasn’t often that the old man doled out praise like this—

ou’re stepping down, aren’t you?”

No answer. That told him all he needed to know.

“Sorry about tomorrow, son.
