Chapter Twenty
Gage
I LEAPT TO MY FEET. When Ace said Maisie’s name, I about choked on my whiskey, spewing it out all over the goddamn floor.
I knew it had to be Maisie when Ace experienced the burning from the first session. I knew who she was. Or who had control of her mind, which was more likely, in my opinion. How was this possible? Was Maisie somehow sending Ace her life experiences? But how?
“I knew you’d catch me,” I smile up at Gage’s mesmerizing blue eyes.
Vanessa glanced at me when she heard my name and I shrugged as chagrin coated my insides at the memory of my first love.
“I’ll always catch you, my love,” he says. “You can never outrun me. Why do you make me chase you, Maisie?” His breath is warm and sweet, like custard mixed with blueberries.
“You’ve been sampling my grandmother’s pies again, haven’t you?”
He smiles. “I snuck in while she’d turned her back. She never saw me.”
“You’re a thief.” I jab my finger into his chest with the accusation. “Are you going to share with me?”
“Yes,” he says, crushing his lips down on mine. Our tongues mingle with the delectable flavor of my grandmother’s delicious dessert.
I shove him back and he hastily unties the lace of my bodice. I laugh at his fumbling fingers as the tops of my breasts become exposed. My head falls back as his hands gently caress each one and his lips taste me. “You’re so soft, Maisie,” he croons into my chest. “So beautiful.”
I remembered that day like it had happened yesterday, but I didn’t want to interrupt Ace’s vision so I kept that thought to myself, wondering how far this memory would take her.
With my breasts bare, he tilts me backwards and we lay on the ground, his legs straddling me. There is no need for a blanket since the many layers of my outfit provide plenty of cushion.
“I love you, Maisie,” Gage whispers in my ear. “I will love you for eternity. You’re mine and I’m yours. I will always protect you from whatever dangers arise throughout time.”
I know in my heart this is true, as my own feelings are just the same. “I love you, Gage. For eternity.”
He unbuckles his pants and reaches ...
“Ace,” Vanessa interrupted, thank Christ. As much as I wanted to relive that moment, it was private and I didn’t really like the idea of Vanessa hearing it all. “Ace. What happens after you and Gage make love?”
Ace sighed with a smile. I had to smile too.
We lay together, basking in the moonlight, letting our love bloom inside of us. Inside of me as I know I am carrying his baby.
Vanessa glanced at me. “You have a child?” She mouthed the question.
I shook my head. I didn’t think so.
Then we both startled as Ace screamed.
No! Oh, please stop. Don’t. Please. Gage! Please don’t hurt ...”
“Bring her out!” I knew what was about to happen and I didn’t want Ace to experience that. Or Maisie to experience it all over again.
