By this enunciation, the authors lead the spectator to establish an abstract rapprochement between two situations apparently with no link to one another, the solidarity chain of the sailors providing fuel and that of the prisoner-friends. This rapprochement is confirmed at the end of the film. After having returned to his friends and his home, Louis decides not to go back to Germany. His friend’s wife visits the couple to remind them that as long as Louis remains in France, her husband cannot come back home to her. Louis remembers his promise and confirms that he will return there. And the voice-over commentary (this time, a female voice)36 concludes on images of lighthouses in the open sea: “Workers on leave, don’t forget that your wives and children are waiting for you. They are asking you not to listen to bad advice and [not to]37 forget that your comrade’s leave depends upon your return.”

In the news on October 15, 1943,38 reports debut about the STO. They all emphasize the daily lives of the workers. Ouvriers français en Allemagne (1943), Travailleurs de France en Allemagne by Serge Griboff (Nova-Films, 1943), and Français, souvenez-vous by Jean Teisseire (Busdac, 1944) take part in this same campaign vowing to show the well-being of these workers living in Germany.39 Ouvriers français en Allemagne40 is a fiction film made by the German news. In it, the workers appear as themselves. The film emphasizes the quality of medical care from which they benefit, the possibility of reconstituting their families by having their wives join them, and the offer given to their wives to receive professional training as nurses. The two other documentaries emphasize the solidarity of European workers, as underlined in the scrolling text that introduces Travailleurs de France en Allemagne: “For the first time, a documentary film brings us news of the lives of French workers in Germany. The film has no ambition other than to show the conditions of their existence in their hours of pain as well as in their hours of leisure and to underline the community of all European workers.” Primarily filmed in Berlin, Salzburg, Leipzig, and in the Palatinate, this documentary presents itself as a report on the idyllic living conditions in the camps and places of work (hiring formalities, diverse occupations, meals, nighttime activities, sports, leisure time, walks . . .). The film was screened at the Gaumont-Palace within the framework of weekly Friday galas for the families of French workers in Germany. As far as Français, souvenez-vous is concerned, it links the decrease in unemployment in France with the beneficial actions of the Germans, who have requested several orders from French industries and who, thanks to the STO, have fraternally opened the doors of their factories to French workers:41 “All work together with the same heart for our common homeland of Europe and for the peaceful future of the working class.”
