Ryder

The most single lesbians on planet Earth

Planet Earth? Ryder isn’t lacking in confidence. I scan the main page and wonder why Julia is interested in this now. The nightclub debacle was just over two days ago. Even if she was interested personally, she wouldn’t involve her company. For Julia, the lines between business and pleasure are clear. One of her credos is “Personal lives are for personal time. Business is business.”

I keep thinking back to what she said. I’ve already done some recon on my own. Recon? What recon? Looking at Grindr? I can’t say I know much about it, but I’m pretty sure Grindr and Ryder have different value propositions. Julia’s not stupid. She’d never think of the LGBTQ demo as homogenous. In my heart, I know what the recon was; I just don’t want to admit it to myself.

“Well? What were your findings?”

I’m walking with Julia down to the hotel restaurant for her meeting. I haven’t been invited to stay and take notes, so I’ll probably get something to go. “It’s a solid app. The reviews are good. When users report problems, they seem to be on top of it.”

“Would you feel comfortable using it?”

“If I was into that sort of thing, sure.” I pull up the app and show her the main screen on my phone. “They allow the users to make it clear what they’re looking for, be it a quickie or long-term relationship or even just friendship.” She looks away from my phone and picks up her pace. “Also, they seem to have a solid search engine. I put in the words ‘Chicago’ and…” Oh God. Did I seriously almost say that out loud?

“And what?” Julia stops and turns to look at me. She has that look of arrogant impatience she gets when anyone on Earth hasn’t provided a satisfactory response. “I don’t have all day. Just show me.” She grabs my phone from my hand. The app’s already up. She taps a few times and pauses. She doesn’t react other than to say, “Oh. Okay, thanks.” She hands my phone back and walks into the restaurant.

I look at my phone. The filters are right there, plain as day, mocking me.
