After I pick up Astrid at the school, the drive to her and Vincent's house is over faster than I thought it would be. As I turn off the engine, Astrid stays still, tears running down her face. She looks blankly out the window, her usual light dimmed by the day's events.

I coax her into getting out of the car with a smile. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s head inside.”

After nodding, she removes her seatbelt and follows me inside. I take her to the living room and sit her on the couch. After giving her a couple of tissues, I go into the kitchen to get her a glass of juice, then return to the living room.

As I sit down next to her, I begin to rub her back. "I'm so sorry about what happened at school today. I can understand why you're upset."

When I arrived, the guidance counselor informed me that Astrid and Molly had gotten into a nasty argument during lunch, leaving Astrid in tears.

Astrid wipes her eyes before taking a sip of her juice. "I don't get why Molly said those things. We don’t talk much or haven’t hung out in a while, but I still thought of her as my best friend.”

I give her a light squeeze. "Astrid, people say mean things when they're upset. Understanding Molly's perspective might help, even though it doesn't make what she did okay."

"But why was she so mean to me?" Astrid looks at me with eyes that are full of pain. "I didn’t do anything wrong."

I sigh and try to come up with the right words. "Remember when we talked about how you felt when your mom passed? How it can be hard for you to be with people, even the ones you care about?"

“Yes.” She nods her head while sipping more of her juice.

"Molly might be feeling the same way. Astrid, she has missed you. It hurt her that you said no to her when she wanted to spend time with you. You didn't do anything wrong, however. Feel what you need to feel, and it's okay to say no if you’re not ready to go to your friends’ houses yet."

She's quiet for a moment as she thinks about what I said. After that, she sniffs and wipes her eyes again. "I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings by saying no. I can’t go to her house after school to play. I even said no very politely, not in a mean way."

“I know, sweetheart, but sometimes even the politest words hurt someone’s feelings. To Molly, no is still no, and she felt slighted by your continued rejection. But as your friend, she needs to understand that you’re still mourning your mother. There is never a time limit on grief.”

Astrid puts her face on my shoulder and shakes with strong sniffles. "What can I do to make her not hate me? I’m just not ready for her to come over or me to go to her house. But I don’t want
