Chapter Twelve

She was drifting in a beautiful river, naturally breathing underwater. Something was by her side, and turning her head, she saw Lee. The look on his face mirrored the feeling inside of perfect peace. Fronds of green passed them, and a beautiful golden light infused her. The light grew bigger until they both rose to the top to a clearing in the woods. As they emerged, she turned to Lee only to see a tiger by her side instead. Laughing, she shook herself, watching in amazement as drops flew from her. With a jolt of something akin to joy, she saw herself. A panther, long, low, sleek. We are Pride. With a look at Lee, they turned as one and ran through the woods, feeling wind upon her face as the trees were left behind for a vast pasture lying out before them. She had never moved this fast. She stretched into all four limbs and shook her head in glory. A streak beside her told her Lee was keeping up and enjoying it just as much. Stopping, panting, they stood at the far end, rejoicing in their bodies. Until a dark scent pervaded the air. Both tensed and Lee looked, his amber eyes reaching deep into her blue gaze. He shook his head sharply.

She opened her eyes to see him looking straight into hers. “Time to go. Now.”

Without speaking, she sat up and threw on her jeans and top as he did the same. Once done, they stood in silence, listening. With a funny pang, she yearned for the clarity of sound she had in her dream. But something felt wrong. She gestured to the stairs, but Lee shook his head, going over to the window. But her things? Had to stay here. He had a small backpack already plastered to his back and handed her hers. The case was too unwieldy to bring down the ladder outside.

Cold air flew through the window, and she shivered. She’d miss the warm wool coat and, reaching inside her case, pulled another jumper from it and wrapped it around her waist. At the window, Lee looked back and cursed quietly. Going back to the bed, he pulled the duvet back and folded it at the end then gave a decisive nod.

He hesitated at the window, clearly not knowing whether to lead the way or to stay in case danger arrived before they could both get out. She shimmed under the low window, gasping as wind buffeted her. With her heart in her mouth, she felt for the rungs of the ladder and, after testing each rung, placed her weight on it. A loud creak rent the air, and she froze. Nothing happened and she whispered up, “That was the third rung.” She made it down without further mishap, and soon the sound of the window closing came to her and he appeared, a large mass in the darkness.

He grabbed her hand. “Come.” They jogged alongside each other away from the house, both unerringly going in one direction.
