Chapter Fifteen

Jackie hung up her teal dress in the hotel room closet, her suitcase left open on the right side of the bed. Lauren hadn’t opened hers yet. She’d gone straight out onto the balcony as soon as they’d arrived, closing the sliding door behind her and keeping out the crisp fall air.

The hotel reminded Jackie of a ski lodge with the stone clad exterior and wood beams. The rooms were modern, the bathroom spacious, and Jackie hoped she’d have time for a bath before they left. As much as she loved her apartment in Brooklyn, that was one of the things she missed most about her old place in Manhattan. She’d had an amazing bathroom with a jacuzzi bath, about the same size as this one, tucked into the corner.

Jackie hung up the rest of her clothes, glancing out the window on her way back to her suitcase. Lauren’s arms were resting against the metal rail, her back to Jackie, taking in the view of the snow-covered mountains. Even from here, the view was amazing. The foliage had peaked two weeks ago, and those leaves were long gone now. The first snowstorm of the year had hit upstate New York three days ago, blanketing the rugged peaks. It was too dangerous to go on a hike, so they’d have to find another way to spend today.

It was only two o’clock. They’d left Brooklyn at nine this morning and stopped for lunch along the way. Jackie couldn’t put her finger on it, but something was going on with Lauren. They’d had a nice chat during the drive up here and while they ate, but she just wasn’t herself. Maybe, Jackie didn’t know her well enough to know what was or wasn’t normal, but there was something guarded about her today. It was probably just nerves for tomorrow, or maybe it wasn’t related to this at all. She could have something going on at work or with her parents. Jackie didn’t want to keep asking her if she was okay. She felt like that was all she was doing lately.

Jackie zipped up her nearly empty suitcase and put it at the bottom of the closet, out of the way. She brought her toiletries bag into the bathroom, touched up her makeup, and ran a brush through her hair. When she left the bathroom, Lauren was still outside. Jackie could go out to her, or she could relax, take out her phone, find something else for them to do or see this afternoon.

Jackie bit the inside of her cheek. She’d had a bad feeling about this wedding from the start. When she’d agreed to this fake relationship with Lauren, she hadn’t really been thinking of anyone but herself. She’d been so desperate to show both of her exes that she was happy, that she failed to see all the ways that this could go wrong. Yes, on the surface it might have seemed like an easy solution. Show up, hold hands, look
