I understand the media likes to portray Trump as a shoot-from-the-hip guy, and, compared to most politicians, itâs easy to understand why he might appear that way.
Trump invited all the members of the COVID task force (groups that I was involved with) to a reception at the Trump Hotel in Washington, DC. I was also in meetings that could allow me to form a decent workable opinion of Trump. I can also say, without specifics, that I have sat in on calls directly to the White House, to the Oval Office, and I can say that Trump was extremely understanding and empathetic to the challenges, losses, and pains of what the lockdowns were doing to business owners and to laid-off employees, and the harms accrued by children due to the school closures. Trump was always sympathetic and sought all answers to get society and schools urgently re-opened.
I think Iâve had enough interaction with Trump (to the extent that I may share) to form a pretty good picture of the man, both the positive and the negative. The overwhelming feeling you get from Trump is that of strength and power, that he wants you to feel safe and you have his complete attention, as if heâs an attentive father or that brother whoâs with you a hundred percent, and, if thereâs a fight, heâs got your back. He looks intently at the person whoâs speaking, shakes their hand in that old-time way of genuine friendliness, and his body language broadcasts that you have his complete attention. Trump commands the room, and heâs very warm and inviting to the people in it. You get the feeling right away that he loves America, and is a huge defender of the flag and all of the rights and privileges that flow from the good governance.
The other consistent trait I observed in Trump is he was always in command of the evidence. The man does his homework. Unlike the criticisms Iâve heard of Reagan, Trump was always prepared. The other thing I donât think gets conveyed enough is the compassion of the man. He was not an aloof, distant, unconnected individual. When you are speaking with him, you get the sense he sees all of you. Iâm not sure if Iâm explaining it accurately. Itâs difficult to describe how this superpower of focused attention by a powerful leader is such an effective tool. However, it is, and you walk away feeling âsafe.â I recall talking to some women when I was in DC around mid-July 2020. Some of them were Republicans and some were Democrats, and they all told me they voted for him. I asked them why, as the campaign was heating up and the election was up in the air. One of the Democrats said something that helped me understand how Trump gained such a huge portion of the womenâs vote and helped me understand this way he connects. She said, with him in power, she felt âsafeâ and he made her feel that her young daughters were âsafeâ when he was the president on deck.
