Chapter Five
Itâs been two weeks since Iâve started back at work, the morning sickness has finally passed and Iâm feeling like a human again. Things with Everett have been wonderful and living with him isnât as bad as I had anticipated. Falling asleep in his arms is heaven.
The elevator doors open and I hear the clicking of heels against the marble floor, followed by the overpowering scent of Dior Pure Poison. Zaraâs here.
She saunters past me and toward Everettâs office, she doesnât knock just lets herself in. âOh darling, you are here,â she says in her annoying voice, the one she uses on those clients who have more money, more power than her.
âZara.â His voice is tight. âYouâre late. Saylorâs been here since eight this morning. You are due to start work at nine and yet here you are strolling in at almost eleven.â
I cringe at the harshness of his tone. âEverett, what on earth has gotten into you. Youâre never usually like this.â Is she for real? âDid you have a bad morning, baby?â Her voice is sultry.
âIâm not your baby, now get to work,â Everett demands.
Zara walks out of his office and glares at me, as though Iâm the reason sheâs being rebuffed. The elevator dings announcing that itâs at our floor, I glance at the schedule, it must be Joshua, heâs Everettâs best friend.
âOh and Zaraâ¦â Everett begins stepping out of his office. âYou are on your last warning. One more misstep and youâre gone. From now on, do the job youâre paid to do.â
âNow, Everett, I didnât teach you to talk to women that way,â his mom says as she strides out of the elevator. âZara dear, are you okay?â
âYes, Mrs Barrett, Iâm fine. Thank you for asking. Everettâs just having a bad day.â
âMom, what are you doing here?â Everett asked, still sounding pissed off.
âI came to see if you were free for lunch but judging by what Iâve witnessed, I think you have other things to do. Zara dear, are you free for lunch?â
Zaraâs eyes light up, she throws me a satisfied smile. âIâd love to. I wonât be able to have a long break. I was late for work and I have to catch up on what Iâve missed.â
Mrs Barrett waves her hand dismissively. âThatâs why thereâs two of you. Ms Bright will do your work.â
I glare at Everett and he doesnât say anything. âActually,â I say, my voice loud enough for them all to hear. âIâve been here since eight this morning doing all the work that she failed to do last week. Iâm not paid enough to do the work of two people,â I say with a smile as I get to my feet and pick up a stack of papers that are for Everett and walk into his office.
âAre you going to let her talk to me like that?â His mom asks him and I roll my eyes at her dramatics. I wasnât rude to her, it was more directed at Everett than anyone else.
