Chapter Five

It’s been two weeks since I’ve started back at work, the morning sickness has finally passed and I’m feeling like a human again. Things with Everett have been wonderful and living with him isn’t as bad as I had anticipated. Falling asleep in his arms is heaven.

The elevator doors open and I hear the clicking of heels against the marble floor, followed by the overpowering scent of Dior Pure Poison. Zara’s here.

She saunters past me and toward Everett’s office, she doesn’t knock just lets herself in. “Oh darling, you are here,” she says in her annoying voice, the one she uses on those clients who have more money, more power than her.

“Zara.” His voice is tight. “You’re late. Saylor’s been here since eight this morning. You are due to start work at nine and yet here you are strolling in at almost eleven.”

I cringe at the harshness of his tone. “Everett, what on earth has gotten into you. You’re never usually like this.” Is she for real? “Did you have a bad morning, baby?” Her voice is sultry.

“I’m not your baby, now get to work,” Everett demands.

Zara walks out of his office and glares at me, as though I’m the reason she’s being rebuffed. The elevator dings announcing that it’s at our floor, I glance at the schedule, it must be Joshua, he’s Everett’s best friend.

“Oh and Zara…” Everett begins stepping out of his office. “You are on your last warning. One more misstep and you’re gone. From now on, do the job you’re paid to do.”

“Now, Everett, I didn’t teach you to talk to women that way,” his mom says as she strides out of the elevator. “Zara dear, are you okay?”

“Yes, Mrs Barrett, I’m fine. Thank you for asking. Everett’s just having a bad day.”

“Mom, what are you doing here?” Everett asked, still sounding pissed off.

“I came to see if you were free for lunch but judging by what I’ve witnessed, I think you have other things to do. Zara dear, are you free for lunch?”

Zara’s eyes light up, she throws me a satisfied smile. “I’d love to. I won’t be able to have a long break. I was late for work and I have to catch up on what I’ve missed.”

Mrs Barrett waves her hand dismissively. “That’s why there’s two of you. Ms Bright will do your work.”

I glare at Everett and he doesn’t say anything. “Actually,” I say, my voice loud enough for them all to hear. “I’ve been here since eight this morning doing all the work that she failed to do last week. I’m not paid enough to do the work of two people,” I say with a smile as I get to my feet and pick up a stack of papers that are for Everett and walk into his office.

“Are you going to let her talk to me like that?” His mom asks him and I roll my eyes at her dramatics. I wasn’t rude to her, it was more directed at Everett than anyone else.
