Arachne's Pride

"Afraid?" he asked.

"Perhaps a little. Are you?"

Her voice at least was as he remembered it. Feminine, but with some gravel in it. He shrugged and said, "Not really. I'm sure I should be, but you promised we would see each other again and I've done as you asked."

"Have you now? I lost sight of you at the tauren carnival and have not been able to see you since, no matter how I tried. Where are my children?"

"The five survivors are blooded and in cocoons. Their names are Tisa, Vie, Valia, Kali, and Will."

He looked down and nudged Idmon's body with a foot as he said, "And this fine young gentleman is called Idmon the Numberless. Said he was one of yours. That you'd come for him."

"Did he."

It wasn't a question, but he answered it anyway as he looked back up into her eyes. "Well, he didn't say it, but that's what he was told. Since you hadn't gotten around to it yet, I decided to bring him back to you."

"And I'm sure Echidna just, handed him over."

"Kinda."

There was a pointed silence from Arachne, and he shrugged and said, "Okay, not really. I took him by force."

"From Echidna."

"I and my people are no joke, Arachne."

"No ... I suppose not, though I can tell many of 'your people' are not here. Only the nightmare standing over there allowed you to reach my domain. No doubt she phased through my swarm, with you as her rider."

He heard a rustling and his eyes flickered from Arachne to the garden, where he saw a pair of the tightly wrapped corpses he'd passed stand up and begin to walk. As they moved, cobwebs either fell away or smoothed into their bodies. They came into the light, and his eyes widened slightly.

He realized he couldn't see any flesh. No bones, no rot. Instead, they looked like they were entirely made of spider silk.

"Echidna isn't the only one who can use puppets," Arachne said, her legs still rustling above him. "Hers might be flesh, but I flatter myself that mine are more pleasant to look upon. What do you think, Terrence Mack?"

"I think yours at least can walk, and wouldn't have back problems if they were real," he said wryly, turning his attention back up to her. "If you attack us, I will be extremely upset. I didn't come here to fight, but I will."

"I know. I am simply keen to examine my son. Allow it. We will speak based on what I learn."

"I'll allow it," Terry said, and watched as the two svelt silk dolls sauntered forward. He noticed as they did that they stayed on the webbing he had not burned away, so he took a moment to lift Idmon and move him to an area he hadn't cleared.

"A considerate young man, aren't you?" Arachne asked as the two puppets knelt to either side of the unconscious elite. One of them reached out and set her hand on his head while the other gently arranged his limbs, crossing his hands on his chest, then his feet at the ankle.
