Chapter Fifteen

"—and fuck all your cousins, too," Val hit the ground with a thump, skidding a few feet before stopping. The iron door slammed shut, the mechanism locking in place.

Em slipped off as I jumped over the couch. Val jumped up, ready to fight, but smiled when she saw it was me.

"Darren!" Val said as I pulled her into a hug.

"Scream," I whispered in her ear, motioning to the main door. "You're fighting a monster right now. Remember?"

Val stepped away. "Yeah, no problem. Just give me a—"

Val screamed, stumbling backward. Her rear hit the floor with a thud as she scrambled back on all fours.

"Hell, yeah. That's good." I nodded, giving her a thumbs-up.

"Above you!" Val yelled.

What had her all worked up?

A bit of debris landed on my shoulder. I sighed, realizing what was happening.

Em crawled across the ceiling, wearing the form she had when I first met her. Her mouth was full of twisted teeth, opening slightly too wide.

Maybe Em had thought ahead and was helping Val play along? I doubted it, but it was currently working, so I improvised.

"She's with us. Just play along," I said as loud as I dared. "Keep screaming."

"It's not dead?" Val hissed, picking up the base of an iron candlestick. "Goddess, above. What is that thing? It's hideous!"

"Yeah, she ain't a looker in this form," I said, stepping back. I did my best to appear relaxed, but I watched them both carefully, prepared to step in to stop any friendly fire.

Em dropped to the floor, putting herself between me and Val. She stalked forward on all fours like a tiger, her thin frame rippling with an unnatural fluidity.

"Get back," Val said, holding a hunk of candle stick out in front of her, waving it threateningly. "I'll brain you, you infernal witch!"

The demoness let out a low wail—slobber dripping from her twisted mouth. Em lunged, swiping a claw at Val.

Val screamed, clocking Em across the face. They knocked each other to the side, both drawing blood. Pain bloomed in my cheek from the echo of Val's strike on the demon.

"All right, I think that's enough," I said, pulling Em off Val.

"Unhand me," the demoness slurred through her twisted mouth.

"Putain. What's it saying?" Val said, pressing herself against the wall.

"Em, please change back. She's having a meltdown," I said.

"The fae should be afraid. She needs to know her place."

Holy damn, there was a lot to unpack there. "Em, would it kill you to be chill for five minutes?"

"What language are you speaking?" Val said, interrupting my thoughts. "Is it infernal? The True Goddess, protect us. The Order was right. You're really a demon."

Now that she mentioned it. The language I was speaking with Val did sound different from what I spoke with Em. I hadn't even considered that it was a possibility. Could they not understand each other? This could be a real problem.

Speaking of problems, Em morphed back into the human-fae hybrid form from earlier, complete with makeup. Her red hair glistened in the light of the lantern as she towered over the fae, almost reaching my height.
