“Just tell them I’m at Charlotte’s,” I said in slightly slurred speech through the phone.

“I’m a terrible liar. Just come home,” Gabe answered.

“I’ve had a couple of beers, and I will be in so much trouble if I come home right now. By the time it wears off, I’ll still smell like beer, and it’ll be past my curfew. I don’t have a choice. My life is shit enough with getting dumped and having a broken ankle without adding being grounded to it. Please, little sister. Just this once?”

“But you’ll be spending the night with a guy you don’t know,” she whispered into the phone.

“He’s harmless. I promise. I’ve talked about J all night, and if that’s not a turn off, I don’t know what is. Ethan’s girlfriend dumped him too, and we’re wallowing in self-pity together. It’s kind of fun. He’s a decent wallower. I had my doubts, but he’s really come through on this wallowing thing.”

“Why don’t I call Charlotte to come get you. Then I won’t be lying, and you won’t be spending the night with him,” Gabe said.

“No. I’d have to explain to her why my eyes are puffy and my nose red. I don’t want to see anybody else. I’m fine here, I promise. Mom and Dad didn’t know I was going on a date, so it shouldn’t be a problem.”

She sighed into the phone so hard I had to pull the receiver away from my ear.

“Fine. Just, be careful.”

“I will. Thank you! I owe you one.”

“You owe me more than one. Be careful and stop drinking!” she whisper-screamed before hanging up the phone.

I watched as Ethan pulled another beer out of the fridge and cracked it open.

“Hand me one of those, too.”

“Nope.”

He must not have heard the end result of my conversation with Gabe.

“No, we’re all set. I’m staying here tonight, so pass me a beverage.”

“As much as I’m glad you’re staying over, the answer is still no. You’re cut off for the foreseeable future.”

He sat down on the couch and patted the seat beside him. I sat further away than he wanted and looked at him.

“What’s the deal? Why can’t I have a beer?”

I didn’t give him any money for them, and I wondered if that’s what it could be about.

“How many have you had?” he asked.

“Three,” I said proudly, knowing I was still holding my own.

“Yeah, you’re cut off for an hour or two at least.”

“Why?” I asked in my most indignant tone.

He moved across the couch to be closer to me and grabbed my hand.

“Because when I kiss you goodnight tonight, and I will kiss you goodnight tonight, I want your reaction to be from the real you, not the drunk you.”

He kissed my hand before moving back down the couch where he was before his declaration of tonight’s future events.

It looked like I might have gotten in over my head after all.
