One’s attention is drawn back to the healer’s mortal hand in that moment when Keats is telling Brown why he thinks he cannot pursue surgery because of “apprehension of every possible chance of doing evil in the wrong direction of the instrument.” And we are reminded, in Hunt’s memoir, Lord Byron and His Contemporaries, of Keats’s self-consciousness regarding his body when its wasting is becoming visible: how Keats would often look at his hand, “which was faded, and swollen in the veins, and say it was the hand of a man of fifty.” Then there is that final fragment, written in the margin of a larger, last fragment, The Cap and Bells; or, The Jealousies, that becomes Keats’s final signature.
