He was still undecided of the method heâd use but knew he couldnât just break into the house and shoot Brady. He didnât want to leave any evidence Ackerson could use to accuse him of murder.
It wasnât long before Marshal Turley knew how to get the job done.
He turned his horse to the west and headed for the new smelting building but wasnât interested in the building itself. He just needed to take something from the small tool shed nearby.
He pulled up when he reached the shed, dismounted and led his horse close to the small door. He swung it open and tied his reins to the wooden knob before entering. It took him just a few seconds to find the large can of coal oil. It was only half full, but it would be more than enough. He left the shed, set the can on the ground and untied his horse. After closing the door, he picked it up again before mounting.
As he walked his horse back to the house near the gate, Rupert began visualizing the inferno he was about to create. Once it was raging, heâd ride away and return to Carson City. After the blaze lit up the night sky, heâd join the crowd racing to the One Star. He wanted to be there when they discovered Bradyâs burnt corpse.
He pulled up near the gate, dismounted and set the can on the ground before tying off his horse. He patted his shirt pocket to verify that he still had his matches before grabbing the can and walking toward the house.

Sean was finally feeling drowsy and hoped that sleep would soon arrive. He wanted to be well-rested when he awakened to begin another busy day.
He didnât hear Marshal Turley as he began pouring the kerosene onto the narrow porch and didnât pick up its scent either. The pungent odor of the coal oil that leaked into the house wasnât much different from the other chemical smells that were omnipresent from the mining and smelting operations.
After the marshal had doused the porch, he left a trail of kerosene along the eastern wall before walking around the front of the house and pouring the last of it in a line along the western side. He didnât want to get close to the corral because he didnât want Bradyâs horse to make any noise.
He returned to the front of the house, set the empty can down and picked up a small, flat stone before taking a match from his pocket. He was about to set it alight when he hesitated. For just a moment, Marshal Turley wondered if he could be wrong, but the small doubt vanished as quickly as it had arrived. He ripped the match head across the stone and then tossed the flaming twig onto the porch. The fire sprang to life and quickly raced around both sides of the house.
Marshal Turley was fascinated by the speed of the flames but quickly snatched the empty can and sprinted to the gate.
