When we got back to my place, I went upstairs while Attie put the kettle on to make me a cup of tea, and poured herself a whisky. A few moments later I came back down with the large, unwieldy tome that was the monster hunting notebook.
âIâve looked through it properly,â I said defensively, because I knew Attie would doubt that Iâd done my research. âBut the book is big and itâs hard to use. Itâs so massive that itâs easy to miss something. I really need to get it into database form.â
âWhen exactly are you planning to do that?â Attie asked. âBetween working at school, trying to get rid of the poltergeist, and fighting your loser ex-husband in a divorce battle, I donât think you have a lot of spare time.â
âIâve got someone who I think can do it for me,â I told her. âSomeone at school.â
âNot that voodoo priestess?â Attie asked with a sniff. âI wouldnât trust her with all the stuff thatâs in here. I wouldnât even trust her with my hip flask. Speaking of whichâ¦â Attie tipped the flask back and took a couple of sips. âRight. Iâm ready to focus now.â
âYou take a look through while I make the tea,â I told her.
âYou can make me one too now,â she replied, and took the book from me. She sat down on the couch and started looking through the pages.
âFind anything?â I asked two minutes later as I bought the steaming cups of fragrant Earl Grey tea over.
I sat next to Attie as she flicked through its pages. Her perfume was flowery and sweet, like a garden in bloom. She had a simple skin care routine, liking a bar of simple soap, and she always smelled like fresh roses.
âLooking through the book sure brings back the memories. I was reading this,â she tapped a page and laughed out loud, âabout the incubi. It reminded me of the time I met one. He kept trying to have sex with me.â
âWhy?â I asked a bit too quickly, and then I flushed. âI wasnât trying to infer youâre not attractive, Attie, Iâm so sorryââ
She laughed again. âDonât apologize. I havenât always been old, you know, so yes, men used to want to sleep with me. But an incubusâ¦there was no way I was going to get involved with one of them.â
âWhat is an incubus exactly?â
âItâs a demonic creature that looks like a human. But thatâs where the similarity ends. Theyâre usually very good looking, and they try to have sex with human women when the women are asleep. They have,â Attie said with a mischievous smile, âextremely large phalluses.â
âHow do you know that?â I asked. âDoes it say that in the book?â
âIt does,â Attie said, âbut it was me who wrote it in, after I slept with one.â
âYou slept with one? How did it happen?â
âLike it says in the legends. I was asleep and I was arousedâin more ways than oneâby a heightened sexual awareness which turned out to be an incubus making love to me.
