TWELVE

When we got back to my place, I went upstairs while Attie put the kettle on to make me a cup of tea, and poured herself a whisky. A few moments later I came back down with the large, unwieldy tome that was the monster hunting notebook.

“I’ve looked through it properly,” I said defensively, because I knew Attie would doubt that I’d done my research. “But the book is big and it’s hard to use. It’s so massive that it’s easy to miss something. I really need to get it into database form.”

“When exactly are you planning to do that?” Attie asked. “Between working at school, trying to get rid of the poltergeist, and fighting your loser ex-husband in a divorce battle, I don’t think you have a lot of spare time.”

“I’ve got someone who I think can do it for me,” I told her. “Someone at school.”

“Not that voodoo priestess?” Attie asked with a sniff. “I wouldn’t trust her with all the stuff that’s in here. I wouldn’t even trust her with my hip flask. Speaking of which…” Attie tipped the flask back and took a couple of sips. “Right. I’m ready to focus now.”

“You take a look through while I make the tea,” I told her.

“You can make me one too now,” she replied, and took the book from me. She sat down on the couch and started looking through the pages.

“Find anything?” I asked two minutes later as I bought the steaming cups of fragrant Earl Grey tea over.

I sat next to Attie as she flicked through its pages. Her perfume was flowery and sweet, like a garden in bloom. She had a simple skin care routine, liking a bar of simple soap, and she always smelled like fresh roses.

“Looking through the book sure brings back the memories. I was reading this,” she tapped a page and laughed out loud, “about the incubi. It reminded me of the time I met one. He kept trying to have sex with me.”

“Why?” I asked a bit too quickly, and then I flushed. “I wasn’t trying to infer you’re not attractive, Attie, I’m so sorry—”

She laughed again. “Don’t apologize. I haven’t always been old, you know, so yes, men used to want to sleep with me. But an incubus…there was no way I was going to get involved with one of them.”

“What is an incubus exactly?”

“It’s a demonic creature that looks like a human. But that’s where the similarity ends. They’re usually very good looking, and they try to have sex with human women when the women are asleep. They have,” Attie said with a mischievous smile, “extremely large phalluses.”

“How do you know that?” I asked. “Does it say that in the book?”

“It does,” Attie said, “but it was me who wrote it in, after I slept with one.”

“You slept with one? How did it happen?”

“Like it says in the legends. I was asleep and I was aroused—in more ways than one—by a heightened sexual awareness which turned out to be an incubus making love to me.
