Chapter 8

With the last piece of the runic stone wheel assembled, the grove was shielded in time to prevent the shadow creature from spreading havoc amongst the dwellers. Having them all assembled by sundown seemed unrealistic, and if it weren’t for Lerro stretching himself thin with duplicates it would have been. With the stone wheel broken into 8 pieces and each 8 pieces guarded by the shadow creature’s overlords, it was not an easy task. Partner it with the fact that this entire floor was an endless sprawl of forests and bogs without a single map or hint at where the fragments were. Lerro had nearly given in and called it a day, the descending floors calling to him and begging him to leave.

Unfortunately, he stayed.

[Fourth Floor Challenge Complete. Challenge: The Darkness & The Grove. Challenge Type: Gather and Gaurd. Reward: 12,500 experience points. 1 AP]

The experience was nice, even if it didn’t quite get him to the next level, but the free AP was always the best reward on a particularly challenging tower floor. Dungeons couldn’t offer such rewards, though they gave far more loot across the board, but towers could off it up freely if the challenge was worthy of it, which meant he had another point in the bank for one high-cost ability he had his eye on from the Shapeshifter tree.

It was a strange ability, but it called to him in a way that others didn’t. He was tempted to get it early on, shortly after receiving his subclass even, but the high AP cost deterred him. He hadn’t wanted to handicap himself when he could be building an arsenal of lower-cost abilities that would help in real-time. While he wished he had the ability already, he did feel like he made the right call in the long run, and now he was just 1 AP short. A level or another lucky floor reward would do it.

“You have our thanks, outsiders,” the small inhabitants of the grove said as they shuffled out from beneath hollows of tangled roots and overturned stumps. “We feared we would not live to see another sunrise.”

Their group was exhausted, beaten, and bruised, so they could only give a friendly nod and smile as a response as they all sat slumped against one of the many moss-covered logs that lay around the area. It had been taxing, a panicked dash of fighting and sprinting to the next again and again, and they had still nearly failed. They weren’t even halfway through the tower and they had probably already been within it for nearly a week, though it was always tough to know the exact length of time until they exited the tower. Even still, a day per floor wasn’t anything to sneeze at either, with some groups taking
