Chapter Eleven
True to her word, Danna had dropped off a card with her cell phone number on it and Alex was flipping the card in her fingers. Her head was spinning with the new information about immigration. She had assumed her parents were somewhere in Mexico, maybe living with her papaâs sister whom he sent money to every month without fail. Alex had lamented over the fact that she hadnât paid closer attention to the address. After sheâd found her way to the Ranch, she figured since her aunt lived in a small town in central Mexico that someday sheâd find a way to bring them back. Money. Lots of money is all it took. There was a phone at the shop, but even if her papa managed to go back and keep the business open, he wouldnât be there now. No sense in asking to borrow Seleneâs phone to call. Besides, maybe the INS agents were setting a trap, waiting for Alex to call. She was hesitant to bring a bunch of trouble crashing down on Selene and Janiceâs heads after theyâd been nice enough to give her a job without papers.
She hadnât promised her loyalty to Selene and Janice lightly. But now everything had changed. If her papa and mama were still in Texas waiting on a hearing and they needed money, she was determined to make some quick dough at the Trophy Wives Club. She had the skills and knew that generous tips were a walk in the park if she provided them with that extra special attention they craved.
Alex began pacing her small studio apartment. She was like a caged tiger. She shoved Dannaâs card in her pocket and took several long strides to her futon which she hadnât unfolded into a bed yet. Yanking open the small drawer attached to the combination side table and nightstand, Alex retrieved the card Marley had given her. It was late and she should really wait to call her. Another night wouldnât make that much difference, would it? Either theyâd give her a job or they wouldnât.
She wondered if Danna would think less of her if she decided to ask Marley for a job. Could she offer Danna those special services without wanting more? It was a conundrum she couldnât worry about right now because her first priority was making quick money and traveling back to Texas to see for herself. Leaving in such a hurry had not afforded her the opportunity to learn the score and that was something she thought she would regret for the rest of her life. Eight long months had passed. What a waste of time. The excruciating feeling of loss hit her nearly every day. She missed her papa and mama. Theyâd been her whole world.
She was definitely out of her element when sheâd jumped into the back of her neighborâs truck. Theyâd taken her to the main road where Alex caught a break. An almost full car of college students was heading to Las Vegas for a long weekend.
