I STOP PACING the floor and take in the scene before me. Fletcher embraces his sister, both of them crying. It’s moving, and my own tears fall as I watch them, then I glance down to the little boy in my arms. He is perfect, and my tears fall hard for my own loss. I don’t have to look up to know Fletcher is watching me; his concern flows freely from him. He’s waiting for the crash of waves that could drown me, but it’s not going to happen. I won’t allow myself to fall, not today. Today is far too important for him and Louise.

Yes, I’m sad about my loss, but being here today and witnessing this meeting between two connected souls that have spent a lifetime apart makes me think of them growing up alone and both feeling unwanted.

They need each other.

“Can I get you both anything?” Louise asks through her tears, as she looks up into her big brother’s eyes.

“No. We’ve brought in lunch but we can get to that in a minute. There’s someone else I want to meet,” Fletcher says, his eyes connecting with mine. Louise releases her hold of Fletch, and I walk the short distance to him. Louise nods, clearly happy for me to be the one to hand Josh over.

“Are you ready?” I ask him. He looks nervous. “Be gentle, like this,” I tell him, as I hand over the baby. I step back and I can’t hide my tears as I watch him come to terms with the enormity of today’s situation. Louise comes to my side and I wrap my arm around her as she watches her brother and her son. He finally sits down, keeping Josh in his arms. “Do you mind if I make us all tea?’ I ask Louise.

“No. I’ll come with you and leave them together,” she says through her tears.

She leads the way into the kitchen and puts the kettle on. I take the sandwiches and cakes from the bag. Fletcher told me to make sure I got plenty, so I did, but there’s easily enough food to feed at least six people.

“How is he?” she asks.

“The news came as a shock to him, but he’ll be okay. He couldn’t wait to meet you. I know you will have a lot to talk about and I’m more than happy to leave at any time today.”

“Don’t you dare. He wants you here and so do I. And what about you two? Are you okay after yesterday?”

So, she reads the papers.

“We are fine. I love your brother. Yes, the article was eye-opening and knocked me sideways. Yesterday was a tough day for us both after I asked him to leave the apartment in the morning. We had the press to deal with, then our feelings, and then he got the news about you. I won’t deny it, his head was all over the place last night when I got to him. But your brother has a good heart and is a good man, no matter what the press has reported about him over the years.
