Fifteen
Henny had expected things to change between him and Matt in the days after his admission. But they didnât. Henny had been on edge the first few times heâd walked into the locker room after their talk, worried that suddenly everything would change. But nothing had. Matt had even stopped by a few times since heâd had come out to him. They ate dinner together, played video games, and watched terrible reality tv to pass the time.
It wasnât until Matt was late one day that Henny started to feel anxious. He could feel heart pounding in his chest. Matt was never late, but when he was, it was because he was talking with management. He hadnât been afraid of repeating what happened in Seattle until today.
Henny was halfway into his Under Armor when someone smacked him on the back.
âDude, moving slow today? You and Axel have a party after I left last night?â
Henny looked up to see Matt gripping a towel looped around his neck.
âYou say that like Iâm late getting geared up.â
Matt grinned. âOn time is late. You know that.â
âNot all of us live for box jumps and pull-ups.â Henny rolled his eyes.
âYou donât know what youâre missing out on.â Matt shrugged as he made his way over to his stall. He grabbed a new shirt and tugged it on.
âOh, I think we know exactly what weâre missing out on,â Gags drawled as he plopped down and adjusted the laces on his shoes.
Everyone looked up when Teppo walked into the doorway and let out a loud curse.
âYou okay over there, Teppo?â Carter asked as he tried to muffle his laughter.
Teppo dropped to the bench and shot Carter the bird.
âYeah, heâs okay.â Duffy laughed. âHe looks a little hungover, but heâs alright.â
âHe wonât be saying that when heâs puking his guts out later,â Dimitry mumbled to himself.
âWhat did you get up to, Teppo?â Matt asked.
âI did a stupid thing,â Teppo groaned as he dropped onto the bench by his stall.
âAnd what would that be?â Henny grinned at his misfortune.
âI decided to have dinner with Dimitry and Alesky last night. I should have known better.â Teppo struggled to get out of his tennis shoes so he could get changed for their on ice training.
âOhhh,â Duffy dragged the word out. âYou should have known better.â
âThere werenât supposed to be any drinks. Just food and then back to Dimitryâs for a little Madden. Somehow, I had more than a couple, and ended up having to sleep in the guest room because I was not okay to drive home,â Teppo explained.
Matt shared an incredulous look with Henny, before saying, âDimitry let you stay at his place?â
âWhy are you saying that like itâs a big deal?â
âBecause it is,â Duffy answered for Matt. âI donât remember the last time he let anyone stay at his pace, even drunk. He usually calls an Uber and sends you on your way.â
âI can be nice,â Dimitry scoffed. âPlus, I didnât know where Teppo lived, so I couldnât get him an Uber home.
