They hit nine times around ten oâclock that evening, after theyâd put Stella to bed, and it had been an incredible day. Not that sex was the guiding force of a relationship, but it told him a lot about a woman and their compatibility. They wouldnât be able to have this kind of sex on a regular basis, not even if they lived together, but that didnât mean it couldnât be a special treat sometimes.
âAre you sure you want to watch Stella tomorrow?â Peyton asked for what had to be the third or fourth time since heâd brought it up. Something had blown up at work, so she was going into the office tomorrow and heâd offered to hang out with Stella.
âYes. Would you stop worrying? Donât you trust me?â
âI do, but sheâs a lot of work and youâve never spent that much time with her.â
âI will make sure sheâs safe and fed,â he said. âAnd nothing else makes a difference. I will also order takeout for dinner so itâs waiting when you get home, and then Iâll turn her over to you and collapse.â
She chuckled. âOkay.â
âI loved spending today with you, Peyton. Not just the sex but being together.â
âI liked it too,â she whispered.
Then they drifted off to sleep and the next thing he knew he was single-dadding it for the day. Stella was a sweet baby but boy, when she was pissed about something, the whole street probably heard her screaming. The morning had been easy, with him feeding her and then the two of them settling in front of the TV for a little while. Then she took a nap, which was also nice. He was able to shower and check his email.
She seemed fussy after lunch and nothing helped. He walked as much as his ankle would allow, rocked, and even sung to her, but she wouldnât settle and then the screaming started. He didnât want to bother Peyton, and he also didnât want to fail on his first day as a dad, so he rocked Stella in one arm while getting online to look up ways to soothe fussy babies.
He tried swaddling and singing and putting her in her swing. Finally, when he was on the verge of calling Peyton for advice, he turned on the TV. He found a sports station playing the final game of the 1996 Stanley Cup Final. It was Florida and Colorado, and heâd watched this game many times before.
âWhat do you think, Stel?â he asked, bouncing her on his hip. âYou think Florida can do it?â Florida had lost in triple overtime, but it had been a great game and heâd had many coaches over the years show clips of it for educational purposes.
Stella appeared to agree, her eyes suddenly fixed on the TV, staring at the screen as if she knew what was going on.
âYeah?â he asked, carefully sitting on the couch but making sure she was facing the TV. âYou like hockey?â
Stella was now cooing quietly, hiccupping a little from the long bout of crying.
