Chapter 23

Jase watched as Garrett’s boss took the now in awe Red and left for the kitchen while a few more people made their way toward Garrett to tell him how great he’d played. It was obvious that Garrett hated it. Every time someone said something nice about Garrett, his muscles tensed, and his complexion turned red. It was all very slight, but Jase didn’t miss it.

Jase wanted to get Garrett out of there. And not because of his reaction to all the praise. Hell, if Jase could, he would leave Garrett listening to compliments all night, especially, if it meant Garrett would believe them. No, Jase wanted to break Garrett free because Garrett appeared exhausted. Ready to collapse where he stood.

Jase noticed a lull in the crowd and whispered into Garrett’s ear as he grabbed Garrett’s hand. “Do you need to say goodbye to anyone?”

A slight glimmer of hope showed in Garrett’s eyes. “Nope. Already spoke to everyone I should.”

Jase tightened his grip on Garrett’s hand and headed to the door. Once outside, Garrett took a deep breath, and Jase followed suit. The distant lullaby of waves reaching the shore replaced the noise from inside the restaurant, offering them a calming peace. The tension in Garrett’s stance dissipated and made Jase smile.

Jase eyed the parking lot, hoping to spot Garrett’s truck, but the stars hidden amongst the clouds rendered the night too dark to see.

“What’s the matter? Did you forget something?” Garrett asked.

Shit. “Your guitar.” Jase hadn’t even thought of the instrument in his plan to help Garrett escape.

“Right here,” Garrett said as he lifted the opposite hand Jase held.

Jase’s shoulders relaxed. “Glad someone’s thinking.”

Jase stood in place and adjusted his eyes to the darkness. He still couldn’t spot Garrett’s truck.

“What’s up?” Garrett asked.

“I don’t know where you parked.”

“Wow. I remembered the guitar but forgot I’m driving.” Garrett peered around them for a moment, appearing to get his bearings. “I’m on the side.” With his hand still gripped in Jase’s, Garrett led them across the parking lot.

“If you’re too tired, I can drive,” Jase suggested.

“I’m good.” Garrett offered a weak smile. “Unless the thought of me behind the wheel scares the hell out of you.”

“No.” Jase knew Garrett would say something if he couldn’t drive. “Just thought I’d give you a break if you needed one.”

“Thanks.”

Once at the truck, Garrett stared at Jase. Not sure what Garrett wanted, Jase stared back at him.

“My hand. I need it back.” Garrett held up their locked hands.

Fuck. It seemed so natural. Jase forgot he’d taken hold of Garrett. And once their hands separated, a slight chill raced from Jase’s empty hand to his heart. A frown marred Garrett’s face, making Jase believe Garrett felt the loss too, and the thought gave Jase hope. Hope that after the month Garrett had insisted on, Jase and Garrett might end up together.

In the truck, they relaxed into a comfortable silence until Garrett’s stomach spoke.

“Oh shit.” Jase leaned forward. “You hung out with us during your break and never ate.
