The next few weeks were a whirlwind for Lacey. Believing she was now on the lookout for a base in Wyvale, Ramie and Alexis had been lifesavers by offering to extend her stay at their house. Between spending her days researching the hell out of starting a charity and enjoying stolen nights with Taylor, the days had flown by.

After picking up the keys to the property on Lovelace Lane, she headed straight for Ramie and Alexis’s house. She was dying to pay her new home and business venture a visit, but wanted to share those first special moments with her future business partner.

Nerves skittered inside her as she pushed the key Ramie had given her into the lock on the front door. “Anyone home?” she called as she stepped into the hallway.

“We’re in the living room!” Ramie’s sleepy voice called out.

Lacey found Ramie and Alexis snuggled together on the sofa watching an old black and white movie. There was a fleece blanket covering their laps and Alexis’s hand cradled her stomach.

“You’re back.” Ramie smiled, lifting her chin off the top of Alexis’s head.

“I am, and I’ve got fantastic news.” Lacey couldn’t contain her grin.

“What is it?” Ramie struggled to sit a little straighter. “Does this have something to do with Taylor?”

“No.” Suddenly at a loss for words, Lacey thrust the estate agent’s brochure with the property details at Ramie.

“What’s this?” Ramie gingerly took the offering before scanning the contents, her eyes flitting from one picture to the next.

“Surprise!” Lacey clapped her hands together and jumped up and down. “This is going to be the new LGBTQ centre.” She could still hardly believe this was the breakthrough they’d been looking for, and she’d been the one to find it.

“I’m confused.” Ramie’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean, the new centre?” She handed the brochure over to Alexis so she could take a closer look. “Are you saying you’ve found us a place to rent that’s within budget?”

Lacey shook her head, positively vibrating with excitement. “I’m saying, that as of today, 23 Lovelace Lane is the future home of a brand new LGBTQ centre. I’m using some of my inheritance monies but got a mortgage to future proof us. Just think, we’ll never have to worry about greedy landlords extorting us for money ever again.”

She pulled out the extra set of spare keys she’d had cut just twenty minutes earlier from her pocket and tossed them to Ramie, who caught them with two outstretched hands. “So, what do you say, partner? Are you ready to start over and build a new centre from the ground up?”

She waited on tenterhooks for a smile to break the pursing of Ramie’s lips. For her stiffened frame to slacken as she jumped up and started whooping for joy. But none of that happened. Instead, Ramie swallowed heavily and met Lacey’s gaze.

“You bought this?”

Lacey nodded, dread shrouding itself around her. “Aren’t you happy? This is what we’ve been dreaming of.”

Ramie didn’t answer. Her face took on a greenish hue as she glanced from the pictures on the paperwork to Lacey and then back again.
