Beyond the Gym: Workouts for Real Folks

If my exercise were wholly dependent on getting to the gym every day, I wouldn’t be able to hack it. If you’re anything like me, getting to the gym every day is just not a realistic goal. Work, kids, hubby time, the regular business of being an upstanding citizen: they all compete for time with working out. One of the reasons this exercise program has worked for me where others have failed is because I finally built a routine based on what my life is actually like, rather than the smooth and seamless wave of daily perfection I used to envision for myself.

I’ve come a long way since the days when I couldn’t get past the juice bar in the gym lobby. I get to the gym whenever I can, but I still need to rely on workouts closer to home to meet my exercise goals. These real-life workouts also provide variety, keeping me from getting bored, and I can do them with my husband, my son, and my friends. Real-life workouts are what you can do without equipment, at home or on the go, with friends or family, or on your own. Did I mention that I’ve taken up tap dancing?

Real-life workouts for nowhere near the gym

Go for a bike ride with your partner or your kids . . . or both!

Take your family to the beach and go for a swim or a walk/jog in the sand.

Pick an activity to learn with your mate. Join a couples yoga class, or . . .

Join a recreational sports league: anything from softball to bowling.

Find a hike . . . and take it!

Take a dance class.

Play tag or hide-and-seek with your kids.

Do chores around the house such as vacuuming, sweeping, washing windows.

If you have a dog, take him on a walk around the block.

If you don’t have a pet, take yourself for a walk around the block.

Climb stairs instead of taking the elevator or escalator.

If you have a Wii, try one of the easy exercise games—by yourself or with a friend.

Try swimming or water aerobics at the Y!

Take a Zumba class—these are inexpensive and popular.

By moving your butt up and off the counter stool or sofa, you will give your body a chance to get the blood moving and the glucose burning! Even a slight increase in physical activity has many other benefits besides assisting you in turning back your diabetes symptoms: you will feel more balanced in your moods (through the release of endorphins); you will think more clearly (exercise boosts memory and problem-solving skills); and you will have more energy (as you burn calories, your body gives you more energy!).
