The entity watched Kana—Promised four, it thought of her—walking through the campus. It couldn’t touch her, not until it was sure she was the Promised, and even then, it didn’t know if it could get past the golden animal that surely guarded her. The Reverend Marcus McCrae finished his sermon, the donation plate circled the room and came back full, and the entity sitting in the reverend’s mind watched as most of the congregation slipped out into the setting sun.

Four men and two women remained behind.

The entity shivered in pleasure, sending a tingle through Reverend Marcus’s flesh as the reverend led the six into the back room. He took them to the basement, where another altar had been set up. Instead of a cross, above this altar flew an angel, one that the entity had made the reverend himself paint, though the man could not remember it. All he knew was that he had dreamed of an angel visiting and woken up beneath it. After that, his dreams grew more intense, more insistent, and when a homeless man told the reverend a secret that no one else alive knew, he believed that the angel had indeed visited him.

The entity had done the same to the six that knelt with the reverend before the altar. It had picked them because it knew they were weak of mind, weak of purpose, and had secrets that none of them wanted shared. The entity had entered the minds of each, gleaning their deepest secrets. It had told them that God would take his revenge against those who oppressed them.

It had convinced them that great truths would be revealed to them tonight, and that, when God was ready, an angel would ride one of them like a horse, leading them to war.

The target was a witch named Glennis.

She was a third-year student at the university, studying business administration and magical physics. She was bright, eager, and having an affair with a married thirty-two-year-old man who ran a bar near campus. On Saturday nights his wife had her bridge club, which left him free to take Glennis to the empty apartment over his bar. The entity stalked Glennis, listening to her and her lover grunt and moan their way to finishing and after-cuddles. Now, it was ready to take her power.

The reverend and his followers rose to their feet and stood in a circle, facing in. The reverend’s face was alight with excitement. His eyes gleamed as he said, “Tonight is the night, my brethren!”

The entity picked the largest of the men, Donald Calhoon, entered him, and made his body quiver. The others stared at him, fear, eagerness, and envy warring in their eyes. The entity could sense their hunger. It made Donald quiver more.

“I am Raguel,” it announced through the man’s voice. “I am the sixth of God’s Archangels, as told in the Book of Enoch. I am an angel of justice, of harmony, and of vengeance.”

“Tell us the secrets,” Reverend Marcus said the words exactly as the entity had told him in his dreams.
