While waiting at the company to talk to Peri, Maggie’s text alert sounded. She read Will’s latest adventure with acclimating Hera to indoors and smiled. Except for a brief tussle when Hera objected to being put into a carrier, the transport had gone smoother than Maggie had envisioned. Hera and Will had been adjusting to the new house for about a week.

Since then, Will had texted her at least two times a day regaling her with the latest news. She loved that there was no frustration in his messages. As he put it, “Hera is a smart and perfect pet.”

Peri opened her door. “Sorry. That conference call went over.”

“Not a problem.” Maggie grabbed her bag and walked into Peri’s office.

Peri pushed a stray lock of hair from her face. “I’m glad to have time to relax. I swear it seems to be busier every day.” She motioned to the conversation corner. “Let’s get comfortable.”

After they were seated in impeccably upholstered barrel chairs, Peri said, “Did you change your mind about real estate classes? The deadline passed, but there will be more classes soon.”

Here goes. All or nothing. “I have an alternate plan.”

Peri’s eyes widened. “I’m listening.”

“I appreciate your input about the license, but that’s not where my interests lie. And I owe you for getting me to figure out what I want to do.”

“I want you to be happy.” Peri smiled. “Property management, then?”

“I have to admit, you were right. I don’t like most of what the job requires. I want to return to my design roots. I’ve been happiest when I’ve staged your properties.”

“You’re outstanding at it. I’m sure your arrangements are a huge part of our successful rentals.”

“Aw, thanks.” Maggie took a breath. “I want to start my own staging business. Rental companies are a hot market and I can make it work. I know I can.”

The wrinkle between Peri’s eyebrows that showed up when she was thinking hard appeared. “You’re quitting?”

“Not at all. I need both my jobs. I propose an exclusive contract from your firm paying for my staging. I’ll take a pay cut so you can hire a property manager to handle contracts and daily operations, emergency calls, check-ins and check-outs.”

“What about marketing?” asked Peri.

“I’m willing to negotiate a fee to do your marketing.” Maggie paused. “I’ll be using the time freed up to build my company. It’s going to take time for me to become established.”

Peri sighed. “It’s going to be hard. I remember all too well.” She rose, took Maggie’s hands, and pulled her into a hug. “I’ll do anything I can to help.”

Salty tears threatened to slip out. If she didn’t have her sisters, she wouldn’t be able to risk this. “I love you, sis.”

“I love you, too.”
