I was so annoyed. There were no words to describe how much it irritated me that I’d been traveling all over Scotland for more than a week now—with and without a horse, walking, riding on a cart—without getting even one step closer to my goal. I wished I’d never left my cozy apartment, never discovered the painting and the church registry. I wished I were back in Payton’s arms!
If what Nathaira said was true and there was nothing I could do to change the curse, then I’d exposed myself to all this hardship and danger for absolutely no reason. And although I didn’t trust Nathaira any farther than I could throw her, I was completely dependent upon her. Oh, how I hated being in this situation, and once again I cursed the impulsivity that had led me to the cemetery and thereby to Alasdair and all of this crap.
I still couldn’t believe I was actually following my archenemy, the woman who had caused so much harm to so many people, halfway across Scotland. Not exactly voluntarily, of course, but what did that matter?
We hadn’t exchanged very many words since we’d left the broch. Everything had been said already. She’d sworn a blood oath that she would kill me if I didn’t do as she commanded, so I didn’t really have a lot of other options.
But as much as I hated being at her mercy, I still wished we would get somewhere already.
The last time we’d stopped to rest, we’d learned Cathal would be holding court in the Duncansburgh market square the following morning. Nathaira had been driving the horses to their limits ever since, intending to reach the town before nightfall. Unfortunately, night had fallen now, and we were hardly making any progress in the bluish twilight.
“Seas,” she whispered, raising her hand to indicate that I should stop. She put a finger to her lips, listening. Now I heard something as well. Voices.
She slid out of the saddle and indicated for me to do the same before leading her horse off the path and into the bushes.
“What’s wrong?” I asked quietly, hurrying to follow her lead.
“Men. Must have set up their camp not far from here. Don’t you smell the smoke from their fire?”
I sniffed the air, and the scent of smoke did indeed reach my nose—along with the very promising aromas of onions and bacon.
“You’re afraid of them?” I marveled, but kept following her deeper into the trees.
Her laughter was muted but still unmistakable. “I’m immortal, well armed,”—she drew her sword from the leather sheath on her back—“and have never been defeated by any man in a fight. Is it so hard for you to believe that I would avoid a conflict solely to protect you?”
I stopped short. Try as I might, I couldn’t imagine she was concerned for my safety. If she hadn’t needed me for her own purposes, I suspected she’d have happily thrown me to the nearest highwaymen. Well, I didn’t care either way, so I tiptoed behind her as quietly as I could manage while leading a horse through a dense wood.
