CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
CARLYLE
“Don’t run,” Aleron bellowed behind me, but I trusted my fae.
I ran like hell because I needed to stay alive.
Behind me, I heard the Ringmaster begin to cackle. I registered the screams of a man and the wet, gnashing sounds of someone dying. I didn’t feel pain, though, so it wasn’t Killian.
I kept running, ignoring every sharp thing stabbing my bare feet and the stitch in my side. A Qilin form would have been useful now, but I was terrified enough without adding a painful shift. Besides, maybe the Enforcer wouldn’t know I was a Qilin if I looked like a girl.
Ah, no.
Crashing sounded behind me, along with a horrifying snort and snuffle noise that could only be the bull beast thundering after me.
"Run, run, as fast as you can, pretty Qilin! The Enforcer is coming for you. He'll grind your bones to make his bread. He'll-"
Thankfully, my breathing soon started to drown out the rest of the nursery rhyme cocktail the Ringmaster was tossing back. I bit down on a scream as a pinecone wedged into my arch, then a branch whacked my ribs, nearly stealing my breath.
I could tell the thing was closing in. I couldn't outrun it - I'd have to use magic.
Now that the iron was far behind me, my body was coursing with magic again.
Gathering my focus as best I could while being in a dead damn sprint, I pictured the beach safe house where we'd been captured from - it wasn't the best, but it was the first place I thought of.
Siphoning had to be precise, and my brain was too scrambled to cobble together another location this fast.
Ducking behind a fat-trunked tree laced with moss, I heaved out the words for the spell and twisted my fingers, just as the wood above my head splintered and shattered. A meaty paw loomed in front of me, and I shrieked just as the siphon sucked me from between the Enforcer's enormous hands.
I fought my way through the dark siphon, operating on pure willpower to force away my panic. I absolutely had to focus on where I was going. Finally, I made it out the other side, sprawling into the hot noon sand at the edge of the beach house - right about where I'd been stabbed by that asshole Qilin.
The magical barrier had crumbled while we’d been gone, and I staggered to my feet, searching the beach for signs of danger.
"Ah, fuck," I whispered, as the air around me crackled and popped with the sound of a siphon. Without even looking back, I broke into a run across the packed wet sand.
It had followed me.
My throat constricted as the snorting of the beast reached my ears. I risked a glance back, just in time to see it throw its massive head back and roar. The Enforcer locked me in his beady black eyes and charged.
I fought back a pointless sob and combed my mind for another place to siphon, even as I pushed my body to its limit.
