CHAPTER FIFTEEN

ZEN

And Then Came Baby

A month goes by, and I haven’t seen Phoenix. I’ve steered clear of the clubhouse. The guys are on a run and I’m staying with Elle, who is very, very pregnant. I’m thankful for the distraction. My time is spent between Elle and the center, mostly with Elle. I’m finding it hard to be upbeat and a mentor to others when my own life is a shit show. After Micah is here and I know Elle is settled, I’m moving out. Don’t know where I’m going just yet, but I have enough money saved to get myself settled somewhere. I’ve had some promising phone interviews with a school in Colorado and one in Indiana. My mind says get as far away from him as possible, but my heart says take the Indy job so I can at least check in on him through the other charter. Elle keeps telling me he did nothing with Breezy, but I know what I saw and heard. Just like a man to go to a club whore, the second things get hard. Guiltily, I bite my lip. I shouldn’t think that way about her. She sleeps with the men of the club, but she’s never given me any trouble before that night. Honestly, she’s kinda nice. I growl at myself aloud. Damn it Zen, is she nice or did she suck your man off? Make up your mind!

My train of thought is distracted when I hear Elle calling my name, “Zennnnnn!” I rush to her bedroom when I see her standing in a puddle, “I think it’s time.”

“Okay, let’s get you to the hospital,” I tell her and wrap my arm around her as she grabs her clenched stomach, moaning in pain. “I need to take a shower and change clothes.”

I look at her like she has two heads. “You have got to be kidding me right now.”

She breathes through the contraction and then stops me. “I am not going to the hospital like this! Call Benelli and help me get cleaned up.”

Pleadingly, I try to convince her otherwise. “Now Elle. They deal with this all the time, they won’t care.”

“I will not go to the hospital with this gunk down my legs. We have time. Call my husband,” she says in a scary-calm voice. I lead her to the bathroom and multi-task getting her undressed and calling Benelli.

She’s standing in the shower when he answers, “Zen, is everything okay? How’s Elle? Is the baby coming?”

“Breathe, daddy. It’s time but we haven’t left for the hospital yet. Wrap it up and we will meet you there,” I say.

“What do you mean, she’s not at the hospital yet? Let me talk to her,” he says frantically.

I go back into the bathroom with a clean tee-shirt dress and the phone, handing her both. “You explain to him why we haven’t left yet.” Before she can start explaining, another contraction takes her by surprise. We are both breathing through it as I try to get the dress over her head.
