Chapter 10: Yoghurt and Shivers

Chris slammed each crate on the floor once he’d unpacked the fruit. He hadn’t heard from Gabe since he’d left his flat yesterday, and the more time passed, the more convinced he became something was going to happen. He could always call Ward, but he didn’t want to tattle on Gabe. Plus, he was pretty sure if Ward found out Gabe’s…Emma knew where Gabe was, he would have him moved.

Chris wanted Gabe to stay. Selfish as it was, he liked having someone to look after. Gabe could take care of himself, but—

“Do you have any more yoghurt?” Mrs. Johnson held up a carton of plain yoghurt.

“No.” When she frowned at him, he added, “The dairy delivery will be here sometime this afternoon.”

She nodded and headed for the checkout. With a sigh, Chris followed. Some days he didn’t like his job…at all.

Time dragged, and Chris lost count of how many times he looked at his phone in hopes of Gabe trying to reach him. A few more hours, if he hadn’t heard anything by then, he’d go up there and talk to him. Not that there was anything he could say to change the situation, but he still had to speak to Gabe, make him understand he’d only got angry because Gabe put himself at risk.

Gabriel was freezing despite both Caramel and Toffee lying on top of him on the sofa. It didn’t matter how many logs he put in the stove; the cabin wouldn’t heat up. And worst of all, Chris hadn’t been in touch. He’d put him in danger, or not directly, but giving Chris’s number to Emma had been a stupid thing to do.

Guilt clawed at him but he would do it all over again even though he was aware of the risk it brought to Chris, to both of them. The ever-present lump in his throat grew bigger. He was a selfish bastard. All he’d wanted was a part of his old life back.

He couldn’t forget the anger in Chris’s eyes; those blue irises had practically been burning. His hair had been tousled, and silly as it was, Gabriel couldn’t get the sight of his bare feet out of his mind.

He buried his hand in Caramel’s shaggy fur—his little giant. She was one of the biggest cats he’d ever seen. When her former owner had discovered she was sick, she’d planned to put her down. Gabriel had convinced her to give Caramel to him instead. With the right medication, she could live a normal life. She just needed to get some of her hormones in tablet form since her body couldn’t produce them.

Gabriel checked his phone—nothing. He would have to go to bed without having heard anything from Chris all day. He hovered with his thumb over Chris’s name in the contact list. How angry was he? Would a phone call make it better or worse?

Gabriel’s mouth grew parched. He didn’t dare to call him. The last thing he wanted was to come across as some clingy loser who didn’t get when he wasn’t wanted.
